ARLINGTON, Texas - UT Arlington graduate Karol Gruszecki is playing for his senior national basketball team after earning a spot for Poland for EuroBasket 2015.
Gruszecki is on the 12-man roster, which also includes Washington Wizards center Marcin Gortat. Poland is in Group A, along with France, Finland, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel and Russia. The Poles open EuroBasket play Saturday against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Gruszecki inked a deal with 2015 Polish League champion Stelmet Zielona Gora earlier this summer. The two-year contract represents a step up for Gruszecki, who signed with Belgacom Spirou Basket in the Tauron Basket League in 2013. He was loaned to Energa Black Slupsk last season and excelled, averaging 14.6 points with a high of 35 and earning Player of the Month honors for March.
Gruszecki is the third former UTA student-athlete to play for his national team, joining Marquez Haynes (Georgia) and Derrick Obasohan (Nigeria). Obasohan played in the 2012 Olympics.
