PEARLAND, Texas --UT Arlington senior Zach Galliford registered a bogey-free round en route to a 4-under par 68 today to lead the Mavericks to a runner-up tie with co-host Houston at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Golfcrest Country Club.
The tie for second place equalled the best finish for the team since claiming the Southland Conference championship in 2011.
UTA managed a final round 2-stroke advantage over the co-host Cougars to finish in a tie with UH at 5-over par 869. The Mavericks turned in scores of 290-288-291 to finish one stroke ahead of co-host Rice in the team standings. The University of Kansas ran away with the team title with a 12-under par 852.
Galliford, the 2016 Welsh Amateur champion, finished in a tie with Kansas freshman Charlie Hillier for second place. Lamar junior Mans Berglund won medalist honors at 9-under par.
He opened today's final round in a tie for eighth place in the 80-golfer field. He turned in a scorecard that included four birdies and 14 pars in a remarkably consistent round. Galliford suffered just two bogeys in his last 36 holes to go with eight birdies and 26 pars.
The Borth, Ceredigion, Wales native equaled the highest individual finish for a UTA golfer since Paul McConnell claimed the Western Athletic Conference title in May, 2013.
Junior Aaron Guanlao finished in a 5-golfer tie for eighth place at 1-under par 215 on the 7,272 yard, par 72 Golfcrest Country Club course. The Haslet native turned in scores of 68-73-74 for the three rounds. He opened today's round at 2-under par going into the par 3 eighth hole. But, double-bogeys on Nos. 8 and 16 were the only bleshes on his round and put him at 2-over par 74.
Sophomore Tanner Gore finished tied with eight other golfers for 21st place. The El Paso native fired rounds of 74-72-73 to finish with a 3-over par 219. Senior teammate Josh Radcliff finished in a tie for 65th place at 12-over par (79-73-76), while Will Dennis earned sole possession of 70th at 15-over par with scores of 76-77-78.
Junior transfer Nick Barney, playing as an individual, withdrew from today's final round.
UTA returns to action on Monday, October 24 at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate at Royal Oaks Country Club in Dallas.
