As the UTA Lady Mavericks took the court for shootaround on Thursday morning ahead of their game with Texas Tech that afternoon, they looked into the rafters to see coach Krista (Kirkland) Gerlich's No. 21 jersey in the rafters. Gerlich was a national champion as a Lady Raider in 1993 and made her first trip to Lubbock as a head coach in the team's final nonconference game.
Rebekah VanDijk, the preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year, also returned to West Texas with tons of family and friends around her. The Nazareth, Texas native joined Gerlich in making their return to the west.
