MIRAMAR BEACH, Fla. - Georgia State senior JJ Grey opened the 2016 Sun Belt Men's Golf Championship with a 6-under 66 to lead the field and give the Panthers a six-stroke lead following the opening day of the championship at The Raven Golf Club in Miramar Beach, Fla.
UT Arlington is fifth in the team standings at 6-over par (290), but just two shots out of second. Tanner Gore and Josh Radcliff are tied for ninth after with matching 1-under 71s. Andrew Sirowy carded a 73 to tie for 17th. Jake Greenspoon (T32, 76) and Aaron Guanlao (T42, 76) also competed for UTA.
"We started out nicely today and are in a nice position with two rounds to play," UTA coach Stuart Deane said. "Tanner and Josh led the team with even, but with a little tweak our other guys will post some low numbers tomorrow. Spirits are high going into the second round."
Grey, ranked No. 81 in the country, birdied the first three holes on the course and continued his strong play throughout the round, finishing the day with seven birdies (five on the front nine) to lead the 55-player field by one stroke. Grey's round was one stroke off the lowest for a member of the Panthers in conference tournament play, just behind rounds of 65 from Joel Sjoholm (2008) and Allen John (2009).
Little Rock's Noah Tullos is in second place after he tallied six birdies against one bogey to finish Sunday with a 5-under 66. Tullos finished the front nine holes at 3 under par before going 2 under par on the back nine. Sunday's score established a new career best for Tullos.
Troy's Calum Masters, a freshman sits in third behind the leaders after shooting a 4-under 67. Grey, Tullos and Masters were three of the eight players under par as a total of 13 players were at even-par or lower in Sunday's opening round.
Georgia State shot an opening round 2-under 282 to lead all teams in the field. Texas State and Troy both carded a 4-over 288 as they sit six strokes behind the Panthers heading into moving day. GSU freshman Nick Budd opened play with an even par 72 and sits tied for ninth for the Panthers. Panthers junior Nathan Mallonee and sophomore Max Herrmann each shot rounds of 2-over 74 and stand tied for 17th to complete the team scoring for GSU.
Texas State got off to a hot start as they began the day on the 10th hole. The Bobcats shot 4-under on the back nine. The Bobcats held the lead after 11 holes at 5-under par following a birdie from Chase Ambrose on No. 2 before falling back into a tie for second. Ambrose led the Bobcats with a 1-under 70 for the day. Ambrose carded five birdies on the day for the Bobcats. David Faraudo carded an even-par 71 for the Bobcats as he tallied three birdies on the day.
The Trojans were paced by Masters and Clayton Vannoy. Vannoy sits in seventh place after a 1-under 70 on Sunday. Masters carded seven birdies on the day as he tied with Grey for the most in round one. Vannoy and Luke Moser (4-over 75) each added three birdies for the Trojans.
Arkansas State is fourth at 5-over par (289). The top four teams after 54 holes of stroke play will advance to match play to decide the champion with No. 1 vs. No. 4 and No. 2 vs. No. 3 scheduled for Wednesday morning. The winners will advance to the championship match on Wednesday afternoon. Six strokes separate teams ranked from second to tenth in the standings after day one.
