CARROLLTON, Texas – Paul Gonzalez shot a career-best 68 in the 1st round of North Texas's inaugural Maridoe Intercollegiate at Maridoe Golf Club on Saturday as the sophomore led the UT Arlington men's golf team and is tied for the tournament lead.
Gonzalez's 2-under performance bests a 69 he fired last year as a freshman. The Waxahachie native – who rolled in six birdies on the day – is tied with UNT's Thomas Rosenmueller and Coastal Carolina's States Fort for the overall lead.
As a team, UTA moved up the leaderboard swiftly during the afternoon, jumping from what was at one point a 14th-place position to a solo finish of 7th following the first of three rounds. The Mavericks recorded an opening-round 301, 15 shots off the pace of leader UNT (286).
Behind Gonzalez in the UTA lineup was
Kyle Cox with a 75 and
Caleb Hicks with a 77.
Tanner Gore finished with an 81 while
Zakary Jones recorded an 82.
The Mavs will begin their 2nd round off the 1st tee on Sunday in 10-minute tee-time increments at 9:20 a.m., concluding with Gonzalez at 10:10. UTA will be paired with Indiana and Houston in the 2nd round. The final round is slated for Monday.
