PALM CITY, Fla. -- The UT Arlington men's golf team improved by 10 strokes on the second day of competition Monday at the Valspar Collegiate at Floridian National Golf Club.

After 36 holes, top ranked Oklahoma State leads the 16-team field, which features 10 of the nation's top 25 and 13 of the top nation's 37 programs. The Cowboys own a 12-stroke lead over ninth ranked Baylot to top the team leaderboard at 17-under par. No. 23 Florida State moved into a tie for third place, along with second ranked Texas A&M, at 4-under.

The Mavericks moved up one spot in the team standings and trail 31st ranked South Carolina by 17 strokes heading into tomorrow's final round. UTA turned in team scores of 302-292 on the 7,114-yard, par 71 Floridian course.

The field returns to action tomorrow morning for the tournament's final round with a 7:30 a.m. (CDT) shotgun start. UTA is paired with golfers from South Carolina and 22nd-ranked Wake Forest.

Junior Tanner Gore (El Paso, Texas) made one of the day's most impressive runs up the leaderboard, improving 24 places to finish in a tie for 45th place at 4-over after two rounds. After suffering a difficult first round yesterday, he registered 13 pars, four birdies and one double-bogey en route to a 2-under par 69.

Seniors Aaron Guanlao (Haslet, Texas) and Jake Greenspoon (Houston) are tied for 63rd place at 7-over par. Guanlao carded rounds of 74-75, while Greenspoon went 74-75.

Grad transfer Nick Thornton (Boerne, Texas) is in sole possession of 68th place after improving by four strokes over yesterday's first round with scores of 77-73. His highlight for the day was carding an eagle 3 on the 529-yard, par 5 13th hole, only the 14th eagle in the entire tournament. Freshman Paul Gonzalez (Waxahachie, Texas)is tied for 76th place at 11-over par.

Following the Valspar Collegiate, UTA returns to action on April 2-3 at the Bubba Barnett Collegiate at RidgePointe Country Club in Jonesboro, Ark. The team plays a total of five regular season spring events prior to the annual Sun Belt Conference Championships, which is scheduled for April 22-24 at Raven Golf Course in Miramar Beach, Fla.
