ARLINGTON, Texas -- UTA baseball will return to action with a three-game series vs. ULM, starting with the series opener on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. CT at Clay Gould Ballpark. The series will resume on Friday at 6:30 p.m. before concluding on Saturday at 1 p.m. The games will be broadcast live on
UTAMavs.com, with the Voice of the Mavs, Josh Sours.
UTA (11-11, 4-2 Sun Belt Conference) enters its final series in March winners of seven of the last nine games. The Mavs are coming off their first series loss of the year in conference play last weekend at Little Rock, claiming the middle game of the series with season highs in runs, hits and homers.
The Mavs will turn to the weekend rotation of senior southpaw Brad Vassar (2-2, 4.07 ERA) on Thursday, senior righty Trae Patterson (1-1, 7.71 ERA) on Friday and junior right-hander Ka'ikepono Anderson (0-1, 7.71 ERA) on Saturday. ULM will counter with junior southpaw Trey Jeans (1-2, 7.88 ERA) on Thursday, senior right-hander Chase Beal (2-2, 5.73 ERA) on Friday and junior righty Justin Olaughlin (1-0, 6.48 ERA) on Saturday.
A native of McKinney, Texas, Vassar has appeared in seven games with four starts in 2018, working 24.1 innings, walking just nine and striking out 18. In his career, Vassar has a 8-13 record and a 5.00 ERA in 48 games and 25 starts, working 151.1 innings with 55 walks and 88 strikeouts. On Friday at Little Rock, Vassar worked 2.1 innings, allowing eight hits and four runs in 47 pitches.
Patterson, a native of Haslet, Texas, has made six starts in 2018, with a team-high 30.1 innings pitched, allowing 10 walks and striking out 17. Patterson has an 8-5 record and a 3.92 ERA in his 22-game career, fanning 90 in 128.2 innings. On Saturday at Little Rock, Patterson picked up his first win of the year with 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits and five runs, fanning three.
Anderson, a product of Pearl City, Hawaii, has made five weekend starts in 2018, with 23.1 innings pitched, allowing 37 hits and five walks, striking out 16. On Sunday, Anderson worked 4.1 innings at Little Rock, allowing three hits and three runs, walking two and striking out three on 72 pitches.
The Mavs have hit .258 as a team in 2018, with a .361 on-base percentage and a .404 slugging. UTA has 31 doubles, 10 triples and 20 homers in 22 games, scoring 124 runs and stealing 13 bases. On the mound, UTA has a 5.50 ERA as a team in 204.2 innings, allowing 98 walks and striking out 138. Defensively, the Mavs have fielded .971, turning 29 double plays and throwing out seven would-be basestealers.
At the dish, senior first baseman Omar Salinas leads the Mavs with a .322 average, owning four doubles, one homer and 11 RBI, including a .413 on-base mark. Junior centerfielder Noah Vaughan has hit .302 with three doubles, five triples, six homers and 18 RBI. Senior outfielder Christian Hollie has hit .294 with six doubles, two triples, two homers and 11 RBI, with sophomore shortstop Josh Minjarez batting .280 with three doubles, one homer and 11 RBI. Junior catcher Will Olson has hit .250 with two doubles, five homers and 15 RBI, senior outfielder Phil Berthiaume has added a .250 average and sophomore Zac Cook has hit .242 with a homer and 14 RBI. Catcher Jakob Nunez has added a homer and seven RBI with a .242 average and senior RJ Williams has hit .215 with four doubles, two homers and 12 RBI.
In relief, UTA has seen senior righty Daniel James (0-3, 6.55 ERA) earn two saves in 11 innings. Righties Logan Austin (1-0, 4.96 ERA) and Andrew Gross (1-0, 5.27 ERA) each have a save. UTA has also seen righty David Moffat (3-4, 3.26 ERA) earn three wins in relief in his seven outings.
The Mavs lead the all-time series with ULM, 46-30, including a 21-13 mark in games played in Arlington. The Mavs have won four straight games vs. the Warhawks, including a series sweep in Monroe in 2017.
ULM (14-10, 3-3 Sun Belt) has hit .255 as a team in 24 games, scoring 166 runs with 16 homers and a .377 on-base percentage. On the mound, ULM has a 7.11 team ERA in 209 innings and have fielded .967 as a team. Johnny DeLaCruz leads the team with a .312 average, with Chad Bell, Spencer Hemphill and Peyton Lacoste each belting three homers. In relief, Keegan Curtis has three saves and a 2-0 record with a 2.84 ERA in eight games, fanning 19 and walking two in 12.2 innings.
