CONWAY, S.C. – Radshad Davis hit the game-winning 3-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining Saturday afternoon to give the UT Arlington men's basketball team (6-11, 2-2 Sun Belt Conference) a 61-58 road win over Coastal Carolina (7-9, 1-3 SBC) to complete a weekend road league sweep for the Mavericks.
Â
After getting a defensive stand, UTA head coach
Chris Ogden called his final timeout with just under 20 seconds remaining to draw up the eventual winning play. That started with about 7 seconds remaining as
Brian Warren drove to the left wing before dishing a pass back to the top of the 3-point arc to
TiAndre Jackson-Young. Despite being 5-6 from 3-point range for the game, Jackson-Young made the extra pass to the baseline, where Davis rose up and hit nothing but nylon to propel the Mavs into the thick of the Sun Belt race.
Â
Edric Dennis scored a game-high 19 points to lead UTA, while Jackson-Young finished with 16 and Davis netted 11 while pulling down six rebounds. The Davis 3-pointer
was the 11th of the afternoon for UTA, setting a season high.
Â
The back-and-forth affair saw UTA lead for 16 minutes and CCU for 18 minutes. The contest was tied nine times, and the lead exchanged hands an incredible 15 times – 12 of which came in the 2nd half.
Â
In that 2nd half, neither team led by more than four. UTA trailed by two, 58-56, with 1 minute remaining before Warren – who was saddled with foul trouble all game – stepped up and knocked down two free throws with 50 seconds left to knot the contest at 58-58. The ensuring Coastal possession resulted in a miss by the Chanticleers, and the rebound was pulled down
Andres Ibarguen – who didn't score, but collected a game-high seven boards – to set up Davis's heroics.
Â
IN DAVIS'S WORDS
"Coach drew up the play with TiAndre being the first option, but TiAndre's defender closed out quickly on him so he made the extra pass and I just shot it. I knew it was going in the moment it left my hand.
Â
We were in a bit of slump, but these two road wins are very big for us. We've really bought into the system and we're starting to trust each other more every day."
WHERE IT PUTS UTA
Despite dropping its first two Sun Belt games of the year at home to the predicted top-2 teams in the league (Georgia State and Georgia Southern), UTA bounced back by doing something no UTA team had done since Coastal entered the league in 2016-17 – sweep the Appalachian State/Coastal Carolina road swing.
Â
That's no small feat considering last year UTA was swept on this same trip, and the two schools are separated by nearly a six-hour, non-interstate bus ride.
Â
With the win, UTA evens its Sun Belt record at 2-2 and is tied for 3rd place in the league with seven other teams. Georgia State is alone in 1st with a 4-0 record, while Texas State is in 2nd at 3-1.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Limited to just 17 minutes due to foul trouble, UTA was able to secure its third road triumph of the season despite leading scorer Warren being held to eight points – six of which came in the final 5:07.
Â
After Coastal scored the first bucket of the game just 25 seconds in, UTA responded with an 11-0 run, capped by consecutive 3-pointers from Jackson-Young, Dennis and Jackson-Young again to go up 11-2 – the largest lead either team would possess all game. The Mavs held a 13-5 lead not even 5 minutes in, but the Chanticleers held UTA scoreless for the next 8+ minutes as part of a 14-0 run to claim a 19-13 lead.
Â
A Warren fastbreak layup halted the CCU run. However, the Chants re-built a six-point edge, 21-15, but the Mavs were able to close the half on an extended 11-5 run over the final 5 minutes to force a tie game at halftime, 26-26, before heading into the aforementioned back-and-forth final stanza.
Â
THIS & THAT
UTA stuck with the same starting lineup for a second-consecutive game: Warren,
David Azore, Dennis, Jackson-Young and Ibarguen … the Mavs had used 12 different starting lineups through the first 16 contests of the season … Azore finished with five points and five rebounds … UTA shot 38.5 percent (20-52) from the floor, while Coastal connected at 38.8 percent (19-49) … the Mavs had just 13 turnovers, and converted 14 CCU giveaways into 15 points … after not going to the free-throw line in the 1st half, UTA went 10-13 (71.4 percent) from the charity stripe in the 2nd half … Zac Cuthbertson led CCU with 17 points; DeVante Jones added 11 and Tyrell Gumbs-Frater tallied 10 … CCU out-rebounded UTA by just one, 31-30.
