Lady Mavs Push Winning Streak To Six With Win At App State

BOONE, N.C. - The Lady Mavericks led wire-to-wire in a 72-65 Sun Belt Conference win over Appalachian State on Saturday afternoon at the Holmes Center.
With the win, UTA extends their winning streak to six games and improves to 18-5 overall (10-2 SBC), while App State falls to 12-10 on the season and 6-5 in conference play.

The Lady Mavs, who held the lead for nearly 39 minutes during the game, knocked down 51.9 percent (27-of-52) of their shots from the field, 30 percent (3-of-10) from behind the arc and 71.4 percent (15-of-21) from the free-throw line, while the Mountaineers were limited to 22-of-61 (36.1 percent) from the floor and 5-of-22 from long distance.

For the second consecutive game, Cierra Johnson led the way with a game-high 19 points. She also added three boards, two assists, two blocks and a steal. C. Johnson's 19 points give her 1,240 for her career and move her up to No. 9 on the UTA all-time scoring list behind Tracy Burr's 1,316. Claire Chastain added 17 points and six rebounds, while Aysia Evans chipped in with nine points and a pair of steals.

The first half was played pretty even, as both teams struggled shooting the ball to open the game. The highlight of the first 20 minutes of play came at the buzzer, when C. Johnson banked in a half-court shot as time expired to give UTA a 38-31 lead at the intermission.

In the second half, the Lady Mavs continued to be in control, until a late run from the Mountaineers cut the UTA lead to two points (49-47) at the end of the third quarter. The Lady Mavericks responded quickly, using an 8-2 run to grab an eight point lead (57-49; 7:02). UTA would never look back and held off App State to secure another big conference road win.

UTA returns to College Park Center on Thursday, Feb. 14 when they host Sun Belt leader Little Rock (14-8, 10-1 SBC) in conference action. Tip-off for the contest is set for 7 p.m. CT.
