Abilene Christian Slows Down Mavericks Offense

ARLINGTON, Texas – UTA's bats got going a little too late, dropping a mid-week home game 4-2 to Abilene Christian on Wednesday night at Clay Gould Ballpark.

The loss snapped a four-game UTA (16-10) winning streak.

The Mavs had trouble against Abilene Christian's Drew Hanson, who pitched 5.2 innings without surrendering a hit.

The teams traded scoreless innings until ACU (11-13) broke through in the fourth inning. Luis Trevino hit a single to left field to drive in the first run of the game. In the next at-bat, Koby Claborn doubled to left field to score another run. However, Josh Minjarez prevented further damage by throwing out a runner at the plate.

With ACU threatening again in the fifth inning, Toby Davis and Will Olson combined to get another ACU runner out at the plate and keep the Mavs within a couple of runs.

For the third straight inning, ACU put runners on base. The Wildcats cashed in this time when Ryne Randle doubled to left field to bring their third run across the plate.

After ACU pulled Hanson in the bottom of the sixth, Aaron Funk got the Mavs' first hit of the game on a triple to right field. UTA couldn't capitalize, though, and went into the seventh still trailing 3-0.

ACU added an insurance run with a solo home run in the top of the ninth.

The Mavs finally got things going in the bottom of the ninth when Zac Cook doubled Andrew Miller home for their first run of the game. Cook advanced to third on the throw, then scored on a two-out Minjarez single.

After a brief break from conference play, UTA jumps back into Sun Belt Action on Friday with the start of a three-game series against South Alabama. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Clay Gould Ballpark.

BARK IN THE PARK…ALL SEASON LONG
UT Arlington Department of Athletics officials announced that all 2019 home baseball games at Clay Gould Ballpark and softball games at Allan Saxe Field will be dog-friendly, thanks to a generous partnership with upstart Lone Star Friends of Animals to create 'Casey's Corner.'

April 16th games (Softball vs. Texas, Baseball vs. TCU) no dogs will be allowed on that date only.

Dogs which are leashed, at least six months old and with the proper vaccinations will be permitted at all UTA baseball and softball games throughout the season.

Casey's Corner is a grassy area between the baseball and softball fields, along the 3rd-base line of the baseball stadium. Multiple pet waste stations have been set up, and the space provides fans and dog owners an opportunity to walk and sit with their canine companions while taking in all the Maverick action.
