ARLINGTON, Texas – Allan Saxe Field is beginning to get a reputation where ranked teams fall, as the UT Arlington softball team (18-18) picked up their second win over the 13
th ranked team in the country in as many weeks, defeating Oklahoma State 2-1 on Wednesday night.
The Mavericks used two pitches to limit the Cowgirls to a three-hit day.
JoJo Valencia picked up the start in the circle, tossing 3.1 innings while allowing one run off two hits.
Laura Henriksen (4-1) finished the game, giving up just one hit in 3.2 innings pitched.
Offensively, the Mavs were led by
Avery Grimes' two-hit game, though none more important than her second, which drove in the game winning run.
Aileen Garcia,
KJ Murphy,
Brittany Wyllie and
Cy'Andria Newton each came away with one hit.
Valencia controlled the pitching duel to begin the game, allowing just one base runner through three innings, while striking out three batters. However, a leadoff home run by the pitcher opposite of her – Samantha Show- put the Cowgirls up by one run. After forcing a popout, Henriksen entered the game and escaped the inning.
UTA took advantage of an error-filled fourth inning by Oklahoma State.
Laura Curry and
Reagan Wright each reached base from defensive errors. Curry was pushed to third with a throwing error on Wright's bunt and eventually scored the tying run on a wild pitch.
The Mavs threatened again in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases off two singles and a fielder's choice. UTA was unable to score, but used that momentum to deliver in the sixth.
With two outs, Murphy walked to give the Mavs a baserunner before Britanny Wyllie smash a double to left field, hitting the top of the wall to push Murphy to third base. On the next at-bat, Grimes came through for UTA, drilling a line drive to center field to score the game winning run.
Henriksen didn't allow a baserunner in the seventh to finish the game and give the Mavs the 2-1 win over the Cowgirls. The win is the fourth over a ranked opponent this season.
