ARLINGTON, Texas - For the fifth time in the seven seasons as a member of the Sun Belt Conference, the UTA volleyball team opened conference play with a win, taking down ULM 3-1 (27-29, 25-20, 25-15) on Friday night at College Park Center.
With the win, the Mavericks improve to 9-4 overall and 1-0 in Sun Belt action, while the Warhawks fall to 9-6 on the season and 0-1 in league play.
Madison Hill finished with a season-high 17 kills and hit .600, while
Kylie Jedlicka chipped in with her fifth double-double of the season (17 kills, 11 digs).
Brooke Townsend added 12 kills (.417 hitting percentage) and five digs and
Bre Walp registered 9 kills and a match-high 4 blocks. Freshman setter
Jessica Stancliff recorded a career-high 54 assists and 4 kills.
Madelyn St. Germain tallied a match-high 17 digs.
SET 1 | UTA 27, ULM 29 | ULM LEADS 1-0
The teams played to an 11-11 tie to open the set. ULM then used a 7-2 run to jump ahead 18-13 and force UTA to burn a timeout. The Mavs responded with a 10-4 run to take their first lead since 3-2 (23-22). ULM pulled out the 29-27 win, outscoring UTA 7-4 to close the set. The Mavericks, led by
Madison Hill's six kills, hit .316 in the opening frame, while ULM hit .256.
SET 2 | UTA 25, ULM 20 | MATCH TIED 1-1
The two squads played to another 11-11 tie to open the set. Tied at 17-17, UTA scored 8 of the next 11 points to take the second set and tie the match at 1-1. The Mavs hit .429 in the second frame and limited the ULM offense to just a .108 hitting percentage.
SET 3 | UTA 25, ULM 15 | UTA LEADS 2-1
Leading 10-9, the Mavericks used a 7-1 run, capped by a kill from
Devon Martinka, to extend their lead to 7 points (17-10). A quick 3-0 spurt from ULM cut the UTA lead to 4 (17-10), but the Mavs quickly responded with a 5-0 run (22-13) that forced the Warhawks to burn a timeout. UTA took the set on a

The Mavs jumped out to a 10-3 lead to open the set and cruised to a 25-14 win in the fourth set to win the match 3-1.
UTA hit +.350 for the third time in the match (.400) and held the Warhawks to just a .077 hitting percentage.

The Mavericks will return to the court on Saturday, Sept. 28 when they welcome the Ragin' Cajuns of Louisiana to College Park Center. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
