Behind A Career Day From Davis, @UTAMavsMBB Rolls Over ULM

MONROE, La. – Radshad Davis posted one of his best overall performances, and he capped it off by reaching 1,000 career points en route to leading the UT Arlington men's basketball team (8-12, 4-5 Sun Belt) to a dominant 78-58 win at ULM (6-12, 2-7 Sun Belt) Saturday afternoon inside Fant-Ewing Coliseum.

Davis scored a season-high 19 points – his most ever with UTA – and grabbed a career-best 14 rebounds on his way to a second double-double of the year in leading UTA to its largest win ever in Monroe in now 38 all-time meetings in the Bayou State.

Brian Warren matched Davis and tied for a game-high point total with 19 – 14 of which came in the 1st half. David Azore continued his stretch of double-figure points in 19-straight games with 13, while Jordan Phillips reached double figures for the third-consecutive time with 10 points as the Mavericks shot 54 percent (13-24) in the 2nd half to run away from the Warhawks.

Entering the game, UTA – which has just one player taller than 6-foot-7 – ranked 2nd in the Sun Belt in league games in rebounding while ULM was last. That statistical advantage played out on the court exactly as it appeared on paper as the Mavs destroyed the Warhawks on the glass to the tune of a +26 advantage (48-22) – tied for the 8th-largest rebound margin in program history and the 4th-largest ever against a Division-I opponent.

The 6-foot-2 Davis led the charge as he corralled eight offensive boards as part of a season-high 18 for the Mavs; the eight offensive rebounds for the Bahamian were one shy of cracking the top-10 list in single-game individual program history.

UTA led for more than 34 minutes and held a double-figure advantage the final 23 minutes as the Mavericks swept ULM and Louisiana in the same road trip for the first time since joining the Sun Belt in 2013-14.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
Davis entered the game needing 17 points to reach 1,000 for his career, which includes a little over one season (36 games because of injury) at Missouri State-West Plains and now 53 games in a season-and-a-half with UTA. The guard notched his 1,000th point on a 3-pointer from the baseline opposite the UTA bench with 6:44 remaining in the game and added another bucket before exiting the contest with 1,002 career points.

ULM came into the afternoon leading the Sun Belt in 3-point percentage in conference games at 39 percent, while UTA was tied as the best 3-point defending team in league games at 27.5 percent. The Mavs locked in on the Warhawks, limiting them to just 19 percent (3-16) from beyond the arc – tied for second-worst of the season and worst in any Sun Belt game.

UTA limited ULM to just 38-percent shooting (21-55) while taking advantage of its own aggressiveness and converting 27 of 32 free throws (84 percent). The Mavs shot 41 percent (23-56) from the floor.

Tyree White led the Warhawks with 18 points, while JD Williams netted 14 to finish as the lone double-figure scorers for ULM. UTA held the Sun Belt's 4th-leading scorer, Michael Ertel, 10 points below his season average as he tallied just six – his second-fewest of the year and only his second single-digit performance of the season.

THEY SAID IT – Head Coach Chris Ogden
"We executed at both ends of the floor and never allowed ULM to get back into the game, which is the sign of a good team. We've still got some things to clean up, but I was really pleased with the effort on the glass and defensive end, and hopefully we can keep this momentum going into next weekend."

1ST-HALF RUNDOWN
An 8-0 run spanning 4+ minutes midway through the 1st half turned an 11-10 UTA lead into a 19-10 edge for the Mavs inside of seven minutes.

The UTA advantage grew to double figures for the first time a few minutes later when Davis found a cutting Sam Griffin to put the visitors in front, 23-12, and it got as large as 17 in the 1st half, 40-23, with 1:14 remaining following a pair of Warren free throws.

Those free throws were awarded as part of a Class A Technical Foul by ULM head coach Keith Richard after he walked all the way to center logo to protest a traveling call and was ejected.

Possibly feeding off that momentum, the Warhawks closed the half with five-straight points as the Mavs settled for a 40-28 halftime lead.

2ND-HALF RUNDOWN
The 12-point halftime advantage for the Mavs never got any smaller than that, and the lead grew to as large as 20, 58-38, with a little under 13 minutes to play.

ULM tried to mount a comeback and put together a mini 6-0 run over nearly four minutes to pull within 58-44. However, Warren stopped that with a jumper and Davis followed with a 3-pointer on the next possession to put UTA back up 19, 63-44, with eight minutes left and killed any chance of a ULM comeback.

THIS AND THAT
  • Griffin just missed hitting double-figure points as he totaled nine and issued a team-best three assists.
  • UTA has won consecutive games for the first time since the opening two contests of the season in early November.
  • Seven of UTA's eight wins this year have come when it has scored at least 70 points.
  • Azore has now reached double-figure points in every game this year except the season opener in which he registered seven points against UT Dallas.
  • UTA has now won five of the last six meetings in the series.
  • The Mavs were without Patrick Mwamba for the 14th-straight game with a broken foot.
  • Four of UTA's five Sun Belt losses have been by six points or less; nine of its 12 losses this year have been by eight points or less, with five of those setbacks coming to NET Quad 1 or Quad 2 opponents.
  • UTA played the 7th-hardest non-conference schedule in the nation. Based solely off overall win-loss percentage, UTA has played the 16th-hardest schedule in the nation as its opponents' winning percentage is .648 (leader: West Virginia, .748).
  • Despite their record, the Mavs came into Saturday as the 2nd-highest ranked Sun Belt team in the NET Rankings at #130 (Georgia State #98).
NEXT UP
UTA will have its first of two weeks during the Sun Belt season without a mid-week game as the Mavs will next take the court on Saturday, Jan. 25, in San Marcos against rival Texas State. The Bobcats are 11-8 overall and 4-4 in the league entering a contest at Louisiana later on Saturday night.
