ARLINGTON, Texas - Unable to get a timely hit, the UT Arlington baseball team (12-4) fell to the ninth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners 3-0 at Clay Gould Ballpark on Tuesday evening.
The Mavericks used five pitchers in the game, with
Cade Winquest (L, 1-1) picking up the start. Winquest allowed two runs off two hits in 4.0 innings pitched.Â
Tanner King (2.0 IP),
Michael Wong (1.0 IP),
Logan Austin (1.0 IP) and
Cesar Gomez (1.0 IP) all pitched in relief. Gomez gave up to final run of the game in the ninth inning.
The Mavericks finished with five hits, equaling the total from Oklahoma.Â
Dylan Paul (2-for-4) led the Mavericks with two hits while
Connor Aube,
Andrew Miller and
Josh Minjarez each finished with one hit. Aube increased his hitting streak to 15 games with his single in the fifth inning.
The Sooners started the scoring in the second inning after loading the bases with two singles and a walk. Winquest got what he wanted as Logan Kohler hit into a double play, but the runner crossed the plate to put Oklahoma up one score.
Oklahoma added another run in the fourth inning. The Sooners put runners at first and second from walks. A wild pitch allowed both base runners to advance before Kohler hit a sacrifice fly to right field to score the second run of the game.
The Mavericks had a chance to score in the eight inning.
Andrew Miller and
Anthony Dominguez reached base and advanced into scoring position with a wild pitch. UTA was unable to capitalize on the runners in scoring position, however as the Sooners ended the inning with a foul ball caught in the visitors dugout by the stretched out catcher.
The Sooners added a security run in the top of the ninth. After Kohler singled to center field, Connor Beichler pinch ran and stole second and third base. Tanner Tredaway hit a sacrifice fly to center field to score Beichler and make the score 3-0.
The Mavericks will travel to Little Rock, Arkansas this weekend to begin Sun Belt Conference play against the Trojans. Game one of the three-game series is set for 6:00 pm on Friday (March 13).
