BOCA RATON, Fla. - The UT Arlington women's tennis team (8-3) fell to Florida Atlantic on Saturday morning 4-3, unable to use their doubles point win to their advantage.
The Mavs took Courts Two and Three to win the doubles point.
Lucia Natal and
Momoka Horiguchi took Court Two 6-4, while
Carla Pons and
Almudena Boza took on Court Three 6-3.
UTA was only able to take two points in singles play. The Owls quickly took a 3-1 match lead after defeating
Aida Garcia Mendez (6-1, 6-0) on Court Four,
Lucia Natal (6-2, 6-2) on Court Five and
Polina Akimova (6-3, 7-5) on Court One.
Momoka Horiguchi defeated Martina Kudelova 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 on Court Two before Liz Chilen evened the match on Court Three with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Natalia Boltinskaya. The match point came down to No. 6 singles between
Carla Pons and Louie McLelland. After dropping set one 6-4, Pons bounced backed and won set two 6-4. She was unable to come on top in a hard-fought battle for set three, losing 7-5 to give the Owls the 4-3 win.
Following a six-game road stretch, the Mavericks will return to the UTA Tennis Center to begin conference play with matches against Troy (March 14) and South Alabama (March 15) with both matches set for 11:00 a.m.
