UTA Athletics Hall of Honor Member Randy Thorpe Passes Away

ARLINGTON – UT Arlington Hall of Honor member Randy Thorpe passed away earlier this week at the age of 61.

Thorpe lettered in baseball for the Mavericks from 1978-81, during which he put together one of the best careers in UTA history. He was inducted into the UTA Hall of Honor in 1996.

His name is written all over the Maverick record book, appearing twenty-four times in multiple categories. Most notably, Thorpe was known for his quickness on the bases, owning the two best seasons in stolen bases (53 – 1980, 51-1981), as well as career stolen bases (151). He is the lone Maverick to reach the 50 stolen bases mark in a single season. His 151 career stolen bases are 79 more than the next person on the list and is a Southland Conference record.

Thorpe also tops all Mavericks in career triples (16), walks (178) and runs scored (190).

His play earned the outfielder a spot on the All-Southland Conference First Team, twice (1980, 1981). Following the 1981 season, Thorpe was drafted in the 22nd round by the Texas Rangers.
