ARLINGTON, Texas -
Carlos Tavera threw a seven inning no-hitter as the UT Arlington baseball team opened up Sun Belt Conference play with a 3-2 win over South Alabama Friday night at Clay Gould Ballpark. The Mavericks improve to 7-9 overall, while the Jaguars fall to 8-9.
Tavera picked up his fourth start of the season and threw a gem in the process. The junior out of Fort Worth, threw seven no-hit innings, while striking out 11 batters and allowing just one earned run.
Michael Wong (W, 1-0) picked up the win in relief effort for the Mavs, tossing two shutout innings to finish the game.
The Mavericks finished with seven hits on the day, led by
Tommy Williams' 2-for-2 day at the plate. All three runs for the Mavericks came off home runs.
Dylan Paul hit a two-run jack in the first inning, while
Boone Montgomery hit his third home run of the season in the eighth inning to put the Mavericks in the lead.
Following a three-up, three-down inning to begin the game,
JD Wadleigh reached base on a hustle play, beating the throw to first off a dribbler to the catcher. After back-to-back outs, Paul took the first pitch he saw and drove the ball over the right field fence to put the Mavs up 2-0.
The score remained the same until the fourth inning. The Jags got their first baserunner off a walk. He eventually made it to third following a passed ball and wild pitch. After another walk, a double steal allowed the runner to reach home and score the first run of the game.
The Jags would tie the game in the eighth inning. A walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt put a runner in scoring position for the Jags. South Alabama would get their first hit of the game - a double off the right field wall - to score the game tying run.
The game did not stay tied for long, however. With one out in the bottom of the eighth, Montgomery hit a solo home run to left center to put the Mavericks back on top, 3-2.
A leadoff single in the ninth game the Jaguars a baserunner. Back-to-back ground balls allowed the runner to advance to third. Wong would prevent the runner from advancing any further, striking out the final batter of the game to secure the Maverick victory.
UTA will be back at Clay Gould Ballpark tomorrow at 2 pm for game two of the series against South Alabama.
