Mavs Bounce Back With Improved Second Round At Sun Belt Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – One day after registering its worst Sun Belt Conference Championship round in the young history of the program, the UT Arlington women's golf team bounced back with its 3rd-best round in tournament history on Monday with a 2nd-round 303 total from LPGA International's Hills Course.

The Mavericks remained in 11th place overall with now a 622 36-hole total, but the 303 round is bettered by only UTA's final two rounds the last time the championship was contested in 2019 (299, 300).

Individually, Romina Gonzalez carded UTA's low round of the day with a 2-over 74 to move up seven spots, and the junior transfer resides in a team-leading position of T-31 with a 153 total entering Tuesday's final round.

UTA LINEUP SCORES/STANDINGS
T-31) Romina Gonzalez: 79-74: 153 (+9)
T-38) Madigan Murray: 80-75: 155 (+11)
T-48) Abigail Adams: 83-76: 159 (+15)
T-48) Sydney Garber: 78-81: 159 (+15)
T-51) Kate Tran: 82-78: 160 (+16)

INSIDE THE SCORES
  • All four individuals who had their scores used in the team total for the 2nd round were better than their 1st rounds by at least four shots.
  • Gonzalez had a very clean card as she rolled in 16 pars and only made bogeys on the par-4 11th and par-4 1st holes. Her, along with all her teammates, began the day on the par-4 10th hole for the second-straight round.
  • Murray had nothing on her card higher than a bogey, and she also circled birdies on the par-5 14th and par-3 2nd.
  • Adams shaved seven shots off her 1st-round score thanks to 13 pars. The junior also had a birdie on the par-4 18th.
  • Garber – who led the Mavs in the 1st round and made the team's only two birdies – could not convert a below-par hole in the 2nd round.
  • Tran was responsible for two of UTA's five birdies on the round, but also unfortunately made two double bogeys.
THIS AND THAT
  • Gonzalez continues to lead the Mavs and is tied for 8th in the 55-player field in par-3 scoring average at 3.00; she also leads UTA in par-5 scoring average for the week (5.00) Adams paces UTA in par-4 scoring through 36 holes (4.15)
  • Gonzalez has made the 3rd-most pars in the field with 28 through two rounds. Adams is close behind with 25.
  • All but one hole on the par-72, 6,193-yard Hills Course layout played over par for the opening round as the scoring average for the field improved from 75.91 in the 1st round to 75.33 in the 2nd round.
  • Coastal Carolina (562) holds an eight-shot lead over Texas State (570) entering the final round thanks to a 10-under 278 in the 2nd round to overcome a five-shot deficit. The next-closest team in the field is Georgia Southern at 589.
