WACO, Texas – A five-run second inning lead slipped away from the UT Arlington baseball team (12-16) as the Baylor Bears (19-10) scored six unanswered runs to defeat the Mavericks 7-6 at Baylor Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Cade Winquest (ND) started for the Mavericks on the bump. He gave up four runs off six hits while fanning five batters.
Logan Austin (0.2 IP),
Wyatt Divis (1.1 IP) and
Zach Norris (1.0 IP) came on in relief. Austin gave up two runs off two walks and one hit, while Norris (L, 3-3) gave up the one run off two hits.
The Mavericks ended with eight hit on the night, paced by
Boone Montgomery (2 hits) and
Connor Aube (2 hits).
Dylan Paul,
Andrew Miller,
Sam Crowell and
Tommy Williams each finished with one hit. Paul and Miller led the Mavericks with two RBI a piece, while Aube and
Phillip Childs each knocked in one run.
Scoring took off in the first inning. The first three Mavericks reached base to load the bases before
Dylan Paul grounded into a double play to push home the first run.
The lead wouldn't last long as the Bears hit a solo home run in the leadoff spot in the bottom frame to tie the game at one.
The Maverick bats stayed hot in the second inning, loading the bases for a second straight inning.
Phillip Childs started the scoring with a sacrifice fly to put the Mavericks back on top.
With two outs, Aube started a two-out rally with a line drive through the left side of the infield, scoring
Tommy Williams. Paul followed with a single of his own, pushing Montgomery home from second base. Miller hit a shot to center field, but bounced off the batter's eye wall, scoring Paul and Aube to complete the five-run second inning as the Mavericks took a 6-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, with
Boone Montgomery on first,
Phillip Childs connected on a rope to left field, but was robbed of a home run, erasing two would-be runs for the Mavericks.
Baylor put three runs on the board in the fifth inning. Two solo home runs scored the first two runs, before a two-out double brought home the third run.
The Bears went back to work in the sixth using a walk and single to put runners on the corners. A ground out to second base scored the runner at third and put the Bears one run away from tying the Mavs. Following another walk, the Bears hit another RBI single to erase the five-run deficit.
A leadoff single and error put the go-ahead run for Baylor at second to start the bottom of the eighth inning. After getting two outs, the Bears connected on a double down the left field line to take the first lead of the game and complete the 7-6 comeback.
