ARLINGTON, Texas ---
Alli Wells has been named the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday. It is her eighth career such award with the first seven coming in the Sun Belt.
"Alli had a fantastic weekend, both in serve receive and defensively," UTA head coach
J.T. Wenger said. "She covered a ton of ground and made plays to extend rallies. She also covered our attackers with zeal, which helped fuel our offense."
Wells, who joins
Kortney Puckett in giving the Mavs back-to-back WAC Defensive Player of the Week selections, averaged 5.89 digs per set over a pair of wins against Abilene Christian and Sam Houston.
On Thursday, she tallied a match-high 33 digs and two assists against Abilene Christian, becoming just the ninth player in program history to reach 1,500 digs in a career. It was her eighth career match with at least 30, and it was the third-most in a match by a WAC player this year, as well as the fourth overall with 31 or more by any player.
The fourth-year libero followed that up with a team-high 20 digs and three assists in a win over Sam Houston, providing her fifth game with at least 20 digs over nine conference games.
Wells is averaging 4.36 digs this year, helped lead the Mavericks to a 14-7 (6-3 WAC) start. The team will be back in action Thursday at New Mexico State at 7 p.m.
