Wells Moves Into Top 10, Mavs Fall In Four Sets To Grand Canyon

ARLINGTON, Texas --- Alli Wells notched her seventh match with at least 20 digs this year while making some history for the UT Arlington volleyball team (11-6, 3-2) in a 22-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-22 loss to Grand Canyon on Saturday inside the College Park Center.

Wells notched a match-high 21 digs and pushed her career total to 1,465, which moved her past Dani Johnson (1,446, 2004-07) and Trisha Walker (1,455, 1997-00) into ninth place on the program's all-time list. It was the 34th match of her career with at least 20.

Meanwhile, Brianna Ford provided another great all-around performance with a team-high 15 kills, 12 digs, three blocks and three assists. It was her 10th double-double of the season and the 23rd of her career. On top of that, she's had four double-doubles over the past six outings.

Outside of Ford, the trio of Brooke Townsend (9), Meredith Fisher (8) and Briana Brown (7) combined for 24 kills. Sophie Skinner, who finished fifth on the team in kills with three, totaled 36 assists and eight digs while becoming just the ninth freshman in program history to record 500 assists in a season. It was her eighth straight match with at least 30 assists, as well.

Townsend's nine kills allowed her to become the 12th player in program history with at least 1,200 in a career. She currently sits 42 shy of surpassing Fannie Burton (1,245, 1991-94) for 11th place.

Alyssa Duran and Kaylen Beaty each had nine digs. For Beaty, her total was a season high, and she nearly notched her sixth career double-figure total, but a fourth-set replay challenge resulted in a point replay, which took two digs off her total.

The Mavs won the opening set primarily behind an 11-0 run that saw them turn a two-point deficit into a 13-4 lead. Ford, who had four of her 15 kills during the run, helped UTA hold off the Antelopes despite a late surge. The second set was much different as the two teams combined for 12 ties and four lead changes. Brown had four kills in the set, which saw Grand Canyon score five of the final points in the set to tie things up.

In the third set, Grand Canyon took the lead on the third point and never trailed, leading by six several times before finishing off a 25-18 victory. The Mavs hit a match-best .300 in the set, but the visitors hit .333. The final set was closer, similar to the second set, as it featured eight ties and three lead changes. The turning point came with the set tied at 21 apiece as back-to-back kills from Grand Canyon gave them a two-point lead. A solo block from Nya Blair pulled UTA within one, but the Antelopes scored the final two points to close the match on a 4-1 run.

"That first set we served very tough," UT Arlington head coach J.T. Wenger said. "That kept them out of sorts. We were able to capitalize on that and win the set. After that, our serving was still ok. They just got used to it a little bit, and we weren't able to put enough balls away to win this match."

With the loss, UT Arlington falls into a tie for third place in the WAC standings with Sam Houston and Grand Canyon. The Mavs will be back in action next week with road tilts at Utah Valley on Thursday and Seattle on Saturday before returning home Oct. 20 against Abilene Christian.
