ARLINGTON, Texas ---
Kayla White poured in a season-high 21 points to lead the UT Arlington women's basketball team (7-7, 1-1 WAC) to a 92-68 win over Tarleton (6-7, 0-2 WAC) inside the College Park Center on Saturday afternoon.
Â
White's scoring output topped her previous high by one point, while she finished 9-of-14 from the field along with three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals. It was her third-consecutive game in double-figures, including her seventh over the past eight outings. Her field goal percentage (.643) was also a season-best.
"I'm really pleased with the overall performance of our team today," UT Arlington head coach
Shereka Wright said. "The response was what I expected of a veteran team, especially from our starters. I'm glad to see everyone back on the floor. It's been really good to see that."
Â
The Lady Mavs started fast, stretching a 19-12 lead to 16 behind a 13-4 run that spanned the end of the first and start of the second. A second chance layup from
Taleyah Jones with 3:42 left in the half gave UTA its largest lead at 19 before UTA ultimately took a 46-28 advantage into the half.
Â
With
Starr Jacobs limited to nine minutes due to foul trouble, White scored 15 of her 21 points in the first 20 minutes.
Â
In the third quarter, Tarleton's defense turned up the pressure, forcing nine turnovers and turning that into a 28-21 advantage behind an 8-of-16 performance from the field offensively.
De'Sha Benjamin scored 11 of her 13 points in the third quarter, or 52.4 percent of the offense for the Lady Mavs in the frame.
Â
Tarleton's Mayra Caicedo then opened the fourth quarter with a jumper to pull her team within nine, but aÂ
Jordyn Turner layup spurred an 11-0 run that pushed the UTA margin to 20 with 6:50 left, and the visiting Texans were never closer than 18 the rest of the way. UT Arlington committed zero turnovers in the final quarter.
Â
Beyond White, Jacobs added 19 points, seven rebounds, a team-high four steals and two assists in 21 minutes. Benjamin chipped in 13 points and five rebounds while tying a career high with four assists.
Jireh Washington had 10 points, a team and season-high eight rebounds, a team-high six assists and two steals in her first start since Nov. 26.
Â
For Jacobs, it was her fourth straight and 11th double-digit scoring game over her past 12 outings. She is 34-of-60 (.567) from the field over the past six games, as well.
Â
The Lady Mavs will be back in action Wednesday, Jan. 4 inside the CPC against UTRGV at 7 p.m.
