ARLINGTON - The UT Arlington men's tennis team took care of a Power Five opponent on Thursday afternoon, defeating Boston College 6-1 at the UTA Tennis Center. UTA moves to 9-6 on the season with the win.
Doubles began in dramatic fashion as it came down to the final court as the deciding factor.
Anton Shepp and
Miguel Cabrera took court one 6-4, but a court two loss by
Alan Sau Franco and
Maks Lukman had the double matches tied.Â
Daichi Akiyoshi and
Ricardo Alban fought tooth and nail, coming away with a battle-tested 6-4 win on line three to clinch the doubles point for UTA.
With an early lead in hand, the Mavericks continued their momentum into singles play, quickly clinching the match with three sweeps in singles competition. Cabrera took down his opponent on line four 6-1, 6-2 before Alban quickly followed with a 6-2, 6-2 win on court six.
Maks Lukman bounced back from his doubles loss and secured the win for the Mavericks with a 6-3, 6-2 win on court five. Sau Franco followed with a 6-4, 7-6 win at line two. Â
After falling in set one 6-1,
Anton Shepp bounced back to take down the #1 Eagles competitor, winning the next two sets 6-4, 6-2. With the match in hand,
Daichi Akiyoshi went to complete the sweep but fell just short, losing on line three 4-6, 6-3, 8-10.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Saturday, traveling south to take on the Rice Owls in Houston for a 1 pm match.
