Patriots Outlast Mavs at Globe Life Field

ARLINGTON, Texas – The UTA baseball team (6-14) lost 6-2 against Dallas Baptist University (13-7) on Tuesday night at Globe Life Field.

Cade Winquest (L, 0-1) started for UT Arlington and threw 4.2 innings.  He struck out five, giving up four runs, three earned, on four hits and one walk.  Gray Bailey (1.2 IP), Cade Citelli (1.2 IP) and Matt Novis (1.0 IP) finished the game in relief, allowing a combined two runs on five hits.

Winquest retired the side in order through the first two innings, including two swinging strikeouts in the top half of the first inning.

After a leadoff walk and a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first, Oscar Ponce drove an RBI single through the right side of the infield to give UTA an early 1-0 lead.

In the third inning the Mavericks would double their lead with a Steven Saunders inside-the-park home run.  The 1-1 pitch was driven to deep right-center field and rebounded off the wall then trickled through the outfield grass.  Head Coach Darin Thomas waved the junior home where he slid in safely to beat the relay throw.

The Patriots broke out for four runs in an error-plagued top of the fifth that would end Winquest's evening and give the visitors a 4-2 advantage.

UTA would threaten in the sixth, positioning runners on second and third with two outs after a leadoff single from Saunders and Cason Gregory double but the home team could not capitalize.

DBU took advantage of the missed opportunity adding two runs to their lead in the top of the seventh inning.

Citelli and Novis shut the DBU offense in the final 2.2 innings, striking out four while only allowing two runners to reach base.
