ARLINGTON, Texas – Mavericks baseball (10-18) fell 10-2 to the #23 TCU Horned Frogs (20-9) at Clay Gould Ballpark on Tuesday night.
Gray Bailey (ND) was tapped as the starter, providing 2.0 innings of work, striking out two and allowing two runs on two hits and two walks.
Matt Novis (L, 0-1),
Jack Hagan (1.2 IP),
Jarod Seals (0.1 IP) and
Trevor Pruitt (1.2 IP) combined to finish the evening for the Mavs.
The Horned Frogs established a lead in the first inning, picking up two runs on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly.
UTA opened the game by placing runners in scoring position in the first and second inning with a
Zach Henry single and
Cason Gregory double, respectively, but were not able to score in either frame.
The breakthrough came with two outs and one on in the third inning as
Steven Saunders entered the batter's box with his signature hop step. On a 1-0 count, he launched a 354-foot, two-run home run, his fourth of the season, just inside the right field foul pole to tie the game 2-2.
The visitors would regain the lead in the sixth by adding three runs and two more in the seventh to give themselves a 7-2 advantage. Despite the opposition scoring in the seventh inning, shortstop Gregory added footage to his highlight reel with a diving stop on a ground ball to the left side, throwing out the runner from his knees.
TCU added insurance runs, hanging two in the eighth and another in the ninth inning for a 10-2 final.
