ARLINGTON, Texas --- The UT Arlington women's basketball team (9-12, 3-6 WAC) got a combined 52 points from the trio of
Kayla White,
Taleyah Jones and
Starr Jacobs, but it wasn't enough to overcome the absence of two starters in an 83-65 loss to California Baptist (10-9, 6-2 WAC) inside the College Park Center Thursday.
Â
Without the services of
Jireh Washington and
De'Sha Benjamin, the Lady Mavs never led, but were within striking distance most of the game despite the Lancers building double-digit leads in the second and third quarters. UTA was able to trim its deficit to just one with 2:25 left in the third on a pair of free throws from White and trailed by just four entering the final quarter.
Â
California Baptist then expanded a 61-55 lead to 13 over a 2:23 stretch and led by as many as 18 twice down the wire, outscoring UT Arlington 29-15 in the final 10 minutes as the Lady Mavs ran out of gas. The Lancers were led by Trinity San Antonio, who had 21 points, five rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead five players in double-figures. They shot 9-of-18 from long distance as a team.
"I want to give credit to Cal Baptist," UT Arlington head coach
Shereka Wright said. "I thought that they did a really good job pushing out the lead and keeping it towards the end of the fourth quarter. That's a really, really good program that's had a lot of success, and they'll continue to be really good."
Â
White, on the flip side, led the Lady Mavs with a season-high-tying 21 points along with a season-best seven rebounds. She finished 5-of-5 from the charity stripe to help UTA finish 15-of-19 as a team, and she sits just two rebounds shy of 400 in her career. It was also her 13th career 20-plus point effort.
Â
Jones added 16 points, three rebounds and a pair of assists on 6-of-10 shooting as she earned her fourth start of the season.
Â
Jacobs, who was double and triple-teamed much of the game, added 15 points, six rebounds, a career-best six assists and two steals. She eclipsed 100 career distributions and is now 63 points shy of 1,000 in her NCAA career.
Â
Shyia Smith, who surpassed 300 career field goals, added seven points and three rebounds while making her 35th-consecutive start.
Â
