CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team fell to Texas A&M – Corpus Christi in game two of the year by a final score of 6-1.
Three pitchers took the mound in the loss.
Bryce Hackett started for the Mavericks, going 5 innings, facing 22 batters, and giving up 4 runs off 7 hits, striking out 2, walking 1 and hitting 1 batter. Hackett took the loss for the Mavericks.
Zach Norris tossed 2 innings, giving up 2 runs off 1 hit, 1 walk and 1 hit batter.
Joe Steeber tossed the final inning for the Mavs, giving up 1 hit, striking out 1 and walking 1 while surrendering no runs.
Offensively, the Mavericks had several opportunities but could not capitalize, plating no more than 1 run on 8 hits and stranding 11 runners on the basepaths. As a team, UTA struck out 12 times compared to only 5 walks.
Matt Cavanagh led the way going 3 for 3.
Tyson Pointer came off the bench, pinch hitting for
Matt Lumsden before replacing him in right field and stayed hot going 2 for 2 and driving in the Mavs only run of the ball game.
Steven Saunders,
Zach Henry, and
Ben Lumsden each got 1 hit to finish out the offensive output for the Mavericks.
The Islanders plated 3 runs in the 2nd inning and 1 run in the 5th, with UTA answering back in the top of the 6th with their lone run of the game.
The Islanders would answer back in the bottom of the 6th, plating 2 runs to finish out the scoring for the remainder of the game.
Game three and the finale of the series will be tomorrow, February 19, at Chapman Field. First pitch is slated for 1 pm.
