LUBBOCK, Texas – A seven run fifth inning was the difference in a high scoring affair, as the UT Arlington baseball team fell to No. 22 Texas Tech on Tuesday afternoon to drop to 7-10 overall.
Offensively, the Mavericks finished with 16 hits on the afternoon, led by
Garrison Berkley and
Ben Lumsden who each drove in two runs.
Tyler Rice finished with three hits and scored one run.
Five Mavericks finished with two hits apiece, Lumsden,
Ryan Black,
Tyson Pointer,
Steven Saunders, and
Cade Sumbler. Berkley,
Wilson Galvan, and
Sam Crowell finished with one hit each. Black, Galvan, and Saunders each drove in one run for the Mavericks.
UTA used five pitchers on the afternoon with
Colby Diduch starting on the mound, allowing two runs off four hits in 4.0 innings pitched.
Bryce Hackett tossed 0.1 innings in relief to be tabbed with the loss.
Jack Hagan (0.2 IP), Marshall Hunter (2.0 IP), and
Zach Norris (1.0 IP) rounded out the game for the Mavericks.
The Red Raiders struck first on a single to right field to plate one run in the bottom of the first. The Mavericks answered back with a run of their own in the top of the third on a Lumsden single down the right field line to tie the game, 1-1.
UTA and Texas Tech traded runs in the fourth inning to go into the fifth with the game tied, 2-2. The Mavericks managed to take the lead in the top of the fifth on a Saunders single to left field to score Black, putting UTA up 3-2.
Things unraveled in the bottom of the fifth for the Mavericks as the Red Raiders plated seven runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead. Texas Tech would go on to add two more runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 11-3.
UTA would score one run in the seventh and three in the eighth to tighten things up, 11-7. The Red Raiders would answer back in the eighth, scoring three runs to go up 14-7 and round out the scoring for the game.
NEXT UP
The Mavericks return home after a nine-game road trip to host Abilene Christian. This is the first home WAC series for UTA. Abilene Christian comes into the game with a 14-3 overall record and a perfect 3-0 WAC record. The Wildcats are currently riding a four-game winning streak.
