SACRAMENTO, CA – A six run 8th inning with four unearned runs were the difference in the game as the UT Arlington baseball team (18-17, 8-6 WAC) fell to Sacramento Sate (18-17, 6-8 WAC) on Saturday afternoon 8-3 at John Smith Field.
Offensively, the Mavs finished with 9 hits on the game, led by
Ryan Black who finished with two hits and driving in two runs.
Garrison Berkley finished with two hits, both being doubles, and scoring two runs from the top spot in the lineup.
Tyson Pointer finished with three hits, tying his career high, and bringing his batting average above .300 for the season.
Wilson Galvan finished with one hit and one RBI while
Tyler Rice ended his day with one hit, one run scored and swiping one bag.
Connery Peters started for the Mavericks, tying his career high tossing 7.0 innings. Peters gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out four on 91 pitches.
Jack Hagan was tabbed with the loss, his first of the season. Hagan gave up six runs, two earned on 44 pitches in the lone inning he threw.
In what was a pitcher's duel for most of the game, the scoring didn't happen until the Mavs plated two runs in the top of the 3rd inning. The Hornets would respond in the bottom of the 4th inning, tying the game up at two runs apiece.
Neither team could muster up much offense in the middle innings. It wasn't until the 8th inning, when the Mavs would take the lead in the top half of the inning thanks to a Galvan single to score Berkley to take a 3-2 lead.
In the bottom half of the 8th, the Hornets got the first two batters on the basepaths before they were driven in to take a 4-3 lead. UTA proceeded to get two outs and were looking to limit the damage before two costly errors kept the Hornet rally going, plating four more runs to go up 8-3 before the Mavs could escape the inning.
In the top of the 9th, the Mavs were able to get runners on first and second before a groundout ended the ball game.
Despite the loss, the Mavericks remain in the top five of the WAC standings.
