ARLINGTON, Texas– The UT Arlington women's tennis team (17-3, 8-1 WAC) secured the WAC Regular Season title outright after sweeping Stephen F. Austin 7-0 at the UTA Tennis Center on Senior Day Sunday. This is their third consecutive regular season championship, having taken the Sun Belt Conference titles in 2021 and 2022.
The Mavericks started off strong with a doubles sweep, securing the 1-0 lead heading into singles.
Bruna Casasampere and
Francisca Vergara were the first to finish with a decisive win over Elena Bleicher and Ksenia Mamontova on Court 3. The pair earned an early 3-0 lead, with strong net play from Casasampere to help win another game. The Mavs allowed the Lumberjacks one more game before Casasamepere served out the set to secure the 6-1 win.
Tara Gorinsek and
Ana Paula Jimenez followed with a strong victory over Jemma Cave and Alkmini Giannakogiorgou on Court 1. An overhead from Gorinsek helped the duo go up 2-1 early on. Jimenez hit a volley winner for the 4-1 lead before allowing the Lumberjacks one more game. Gorinsek finished off the set with another volley winner, clinching the doubles point and the 6-2 victory.
The final doubles victory came down to Court 2, with
Liz Chileno and
Sarina Reinertsen taking the close win against Felicia Back and Zala Ule. The Lumberjacks came out strong, earning a 4-1 lead. Strong baseline rallies from Reinertsen helped the Mavericks get back into the match, bringing the score to 4-3.
Reinertsen hit a backhand winner to tie up the match at 4-4, then a forehand winner from Chileno secured the 5-4 lead. After a long rally on match point, Reinertsen outlasted the Lumberjacks to finish off the set 6-4.
The Mavericks carried that momentum into singles action, earning victories at each line to complete the sweep.
Reinertsen finished quickly on Court 3, dropping only one game to Ule to take the first singles point. She started off the first set with a forehand winner to take the early 2-0 lead, then took the set without allowing Ule a game 6-0.
The next set followed in a similar manner, with Reinertsen dropping only one game to Ule before taking the win. Ule earned one game before Reinertsen took the lead, going up 4-1 with an overhead. Reinertsen forced an error on match point after a long rally, winning the final set 6-1. She finishes her conference matches with an 8-1 record and a 14-3 record overall.
Gorinsek soon followed with another decisive victory, taking out Mamontova in straight sets on Court 2. She earned an early lead in the first set, going up 2-0. Mamontova earned one game before Gorinsek finished off the first set 6-1.
Gorinsek was too much to overcome in the second set, with strong baseline play helping her go up 3-1 early in the set. She allowed Mamontova one more game, then took the set and the match 6-2 after forcing an error. Gorinsek finishes her conference play with a 7-2 record and a 12-5 record overall.
Casasampere continued the Mavericks' success with another victory, defeating Cave on Court 4 to move to 11-7 on the season. The first set stayed close until 3-2, when Casasampere forced an error to earn the 4-2 lead. She proceeded to close out the set without dropping another game, winning 6-2.
The second set followed in a similar fashion, with Casasampere allowing Cave two games before taking the victory. Strong baseline play allowed her a 3-0 lead. Cave earned two games before Casasampere closed out the set 6-2 with a forced error. The win clinched the match and the regular season title for the Mavericks, with Casasampere earning her fifth conference win.
Court 6 was the next off with another dominant performance from Vergara. In her ninth consecutive win, Vergara took out Saga Koch in straight sets to move to 16-2 on the season. She got off to a strong start in the first set, going up 4-1 with a strong forehand winner from the baseline.
Koch came out strong in the second set and gained a 2-0 lead, but Vergara closed the gap and went ahead 3-2. She did not drop another game, earning a 5-2 lead with an overhead. Vergara closed out the match 6-2, finishing with a conference record of 9-1.
Jimenez followed soon after, earning her tenth consecutive win on Court 5. She took out Back in straight sets to finish conference play undefeated and move to 16-1 overall. Back started off strong in the first set, carrying a one game advantage over Jimenez. Jimenez fought hard to even the score at 4-4, then proceeded to take the next game to go up 5-4. She closed out the set 6-4.
The momentum carried into the second set, with Jimenez going up early on with a 4-1 lead. Back did not earn another game, with Jimenez forcing an error to take the set and match 6-1.
Senior Chileno earned her final victory at the UTA Tennis Center over Giannakogiorgou on Court 1 to complete the sweep for the Mavericks. The first set stayed close, with Chileno staying one game ahead. Giannakogiorgou forced the tie at 5-5, but Chileno finished off the set 7-5, forcing an error.
Chileno got off to a strong start in the second, earning a 3-0 lead. Giannakogiorgou closed the gap and evened the score at 3-3, but Chileno saved the final point in the next game to go up 4-3. A double fault helped Chileno earn the 5-3 lead before she finished off the set with an ace, securing the 6-3 victory. She finishes conference play with five WAC wins and 12-6 overall record.
The Mavericks will head into the WAC tournament for their next series of matches. Play starts on April 27 at the Arlington Tennis Center.
