UTA Falls To No. 18 DBU Despite Outhitting Patriots

DALLAS, Texas – In a high scoring affair, the UT Arlington baseball team (19-18, 9-6 WAC) fall to No. 18 Dallas Baptist (28-9, 12-3 C-USA) on a gusty Tuesday night at Horner Ballpark.

Despite outhitting the Patriots 17 to 12, the Mavericks couldn't slow down the high powered DBU offense who plated six runs in the bottom of the 8th inning to take a three-run lead into the 9th where they would shut the door on the Mavs.

Every starter picked up a base hit for the Mavs, led by Ryan Black who finished with three base hits and three runs batted in while scoring twice.

Tyson Pointer remained hot, collecting two base hits and driving in three runs. With the two hits, Pointer now has a seven-game hitting streak going into this weekend.

Garrison Berkley finished his night with two base hits and drove two runs in while scoring one run. Wilson Galvan collected three hits on the game while scoring two runs.

Sam Crowell and Tyler Rice both gathered two hits apiece to finish their night, with Crowell driving in one run. Tanner Rice, Tyce Armstrong and Cade Sumbler all finished with one hit to round out the offensive output for the Mavericks. Tanner Rice also drove in one run on the night.

UTA used four pitchers on the night, with Brayden Brooks getting the start and going 2.2 innings and giving up four runs on three hits and striking out three. In relief of Brooks, Thomas Kuykendall went 1.2 innings, giving up one run on three hits and punching out five Patriot batters. Hunter Marshall relieved Kuykendall and shoved for 2.2 innings, surrendering two runs on three hits while striking out three. Gray Bailey finished the game for the Mavs, going one inning and was tabbed with the loss.

Dallas Baptist jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before UTA responded with a run in the top of the 3rd. DBU matched that with a run of their own in the bottom half of the 3rd inning to bring the score to 4-1.

UTA exploded in the top of the 5th inning for four runs to take their first lead of the ball game, 5-4. DBU answered back in the bottom half of the inning, plating one run to tie things up at five runs apiece.

UTA erupted for another big inning in the 7th, scoring five runs to go up 10-5. The top half of the inning was capped off with a Tyson Pointer blast to left center field, his third home run in his last two games. DBU would go on to chip away in the bottom half of the inning, plating two runs via two solo home runs, to make it a 10-7 ball game.

DBU held UTA at bay in the 8th inning before rattling off six runs to regain the lead, 13-10 over the Mavericks. The Patriots were able to shut the door on the Mavs in the 9th inning to claim the win.
