ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (26-27, 16-14 WAC) split the day with the Utah Valley Wolverines (31-22, 16-12 WAC) winning the first game by way of a walk off, 6-5, then falling in the second by a final score of 8-6.
The first game of Saturday was a continuation from yesterday's game, May 19, that was suspended after 6.2 innings of play due to a weather/lightning delay. At the time of suspension, the Mavericks were leading 5-3.
GAME ONE
In the second game of the series, the Mavs secured the win via a walk off to down the Wolverines by a final score of 6-5.
The Mavs finished with seven hits for the game led by Cade Sumber and
Ben Lumsden who both finished with two hits, an RBI and scored a run.
Garrison Berkley,
Tyson Pointer and
Matt Cavanagh each cracked out a base hit and drove in one run to round out the offense for UTA.
Four pitchers were used in the effort with
Connery Peters starting on the mound for the Mavs. Peters went 4.2 innings and gave up three runs on five hits.
Gray Bailey tossed 2.1 innings of shut-out baseball, surrendering no runs and just one base hit.
Matt Novis went 1.0 inning, giving up two runs on two hits.
Jack Hagan picked up the victory on the mound, his seventh of the year, throwing 1.0 inning and giving up no runs and no hits.
The Mavs and Wolverines were scoreless through the first two innings before UTA plated three runs in the bottom of the which started with a Berkley single to score Cavanagh and ended with a Pointer sacrifice fly to score Berkley, making it a 3-0 game.
After a scoreless 4th, Utah Valley would tie the game up with a three-run inning of their own in the top of the 5th.
In the bottom of the 6th, the Mavs would regain the lead with a two-run inning that concluded with a Lumsden double to left center to score Sumbler, making it 5-3. Game play would be suspended after a four-hour weather delay. Two outs were recorded in the inning with Pointer coming up to the plate.
The game picked back up on Saturday morning, May 20, at 10 a.m.
The 7th inning wrapped up with Utah Valley recording the final out, after loading up the bases but failed to push a run across. The Wolverines would go on to tie the game in the top of the 8th, plating two runs to make it a 5-5 game.
In the bottom of the 9th, the Mavs would go on to get runners on first and second with two outs with Sumbler stepping up to the plate. On a 1-2 count, Sumbler goes on to drop a single in left center field with Galvan racing around third and sliding into home for the walk-off victory, 6-5. It's Sumbler's second walk-off hit of the season.
GAME TWO
The home and series finale began 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game of the day. The Mavs fell to Utah Valley, despite outhitting the Wolverines twelve to nine, by a final score of 8-6.
Berkley,
Steven Saunders and
Tyce Armstrong led the charge for the Mavs, each collecting two hits with Saunders driving in a run. Pointer finished with two RBIs off a big home run with Sumbler and
Wilson Galvan chipping in with one RBI off solo homers.
Ryan Black,
Tyler Rice and Lumsden each finished with a hit with Black adding an RBI to the mix to complete the offensive performance for UTA.
Three pitchers were utilized for the Mavs, with
Brayden Brooks getting the start on Senior Day. Brooks hurled 3.2 innings, conceding four runs, three earned, on three hits while striking out three.
Caden Noah replaced Brooks, also tossing 3.2 innings, giving up four runs on six hits and punching out three.
Hunter Marshall pitched the last 1.2 innings, giving up no runs on no hits. Marshall retired all five batters he faced.
After a scoreless 1st inning, Utah Valley took a 1-0 lead in the 2nd inning. UTA would tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to a Black single to left field that would score Berkley.
The Wolverines would regain the lead due to a three-run 4th inning, going up 4-1. Utah Valley would tack on one more run in the top of the 5th to make it a 5-1 game.
The Mavs would plate a run in the 6th inning off a sacrifice fly from Saunders to make it a 5-2 game. Both teams would exchange runs in the 7th to make it a 6-3 game, with Galvan launching a rocket over the left field fence for his fourth home run of the season.
Utah Valley added two insurance runs in the 8th to go up 8-3, which proved to be pivotal in the end.
The Mavs would plate three runs in the bottom of the 9th by way of back-to-back home runs. Pointer blasted a two-run bomb on the first pitch he saw and was followed by Sumbler who homered on the first pitch of his at bat to make it an 8-6 game.
The Mavs would bring the tying run to the plate with one out before grounding into a game ending double play.
NEXT UP
The sixth seed Mavs are set to play the seventh seed UT Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros in the 2023 WAC Baseball Tournament. The game is set for Tuesday, May 23, with a 6 p.m. central time start. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
