ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington baseball team (23-21, 13-9 WAC) fell to California Baptist (25-21, 13-9 WAC) 5-4 in 10 innings at Clay Gould Ballpark on Friday afternoon.
It's the second extra inning game of the season for the Mavericks, with this one going 10. With the loss, the Mavs fall to 1-1 in extras this year.
UTA finished with eight hits on the afternoon, led by freshman
Ben Lumsden who smacked his 11th home run of the season, a solo shot, and finished 2-4 with the one RBI.
Cade Sumbler chipped in with a two-hit afternoon, finishing 2-5 and scored a run.
Four Mavs,
Garrison Berkley,
Wilson Galvan,
Ryan Black and
Matt Cavanagh, finished with a base hit to round the total hits for UTA. With the hit, Berkley and Galvan extend their on-base streak for the year. Berkley moves his streak to 32 games reaching base safely as well as extending his hitting streak to eight games. Galvan has now reached base safely in 31 consecutive games. Berkley also doubled in the game, his team-leading 17th on the season.
Tyson Pointer and
Steven Saunders each finished with one RBI for the game on sacrifices, rounding out the offensive output for the Mavs.
The Mavs used three pitchers for the game, with
Gabe Starks getting the start on the mound. Starks went 6.0 solid innings, giving up three runs on four hits. He tied his career high with eight strikeouts, the fourth time this season Starks has reached that tally.
Gray Bailey relieved Starks, going 3.0 innings and surrendering two runs on three hits and striking out one Lancer batter. Bailey was tabbed with the loss to go to 2-3 on the season.
Matt Novis finished the game for the Mavs, pitching the 10th and giving up no runs and two hits.
After a scoreless 1st inning, the Mavs plated two runs in the bottom half of the 2nd thanks to Lumsden's solo shot on the first pitch he saw to start the inning and ending with Sumbler scoring on a throwing error by the Lancers' second baseman.
CBU cut the UTA lead in half, scoring one run in the top of the 3rd, to make it a 2-1 ball game. In the 4th inning, the Lancers tied the game up 2-2 on a sacrifice fly.
The Mavs regained the lead in the bottom half of the 5th, pushing across two runs off the bats of Pointer and Saunders, to go up 4-2.
A scoreless 6th brought us to the 7th where CBU plated two runs in the top half of the inning to tie up the game, 4-4.
The 8th and 9th innings finished without either team being able to scratch a run across and to extras we went. CBU was able to score one run in the top of the 10th after a diving attempt by the Mavs to end the inning came up just short.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Mavs threatened, loading the bases but were unable to push across a run to drop the series opener.
