Record-Breaking Numbers Highlight Season-Opening Round at Timpanogos Collegiate Invite

PROVO, Utah – Behind record-breaking numbers from sophomores Kamri Gabel and Madison Le, the UT Arlington women's golf team posted its best low round in program history with a 1st-round 280 (-8) in Sunday's opening round at the Timpanogos Collegiate Invitational.

The Mavericks are currently tied for 2nd-place overall with Cal State Fullerton across the 19-team field. Sunday's low round marks a new program record for UTA as the Mavs' previous record was a -3 performance at Arkansas State's Lady Red Wolves Class back in 2020.

Gabel turned in her best round of her collegiate career as the sophomore's card was nearly flawless – aside from one hiccup on 14. The Texas native improved her best low round score by eight shots after tabbing a final-round 73 back at the University of South Alabama's Intercollegiate. Now, Gabel holds the best low round in UTA program lore.

Fellow sophomore, Madison Le, had a remarkable opening round herself as she reached a new milestone in her collegiate career, logging a 1st-round 68. With three rounds of even par or better to her name a season ago, Le now totals four in her young career.

Purdue transfer Nitisha Manikandesh made quite the UTA debut as the newcomer posted an even 72 – best of her career.

UTA SCORES
T-1) Kamri Gabel: 65 (-7)
T-4) Madison Le: 68 (-4)
T-25) Nitisha Manikandesh: 72 (E)
T-59) Nirjara Gulhane: 75 (+3)
T-92) Emilynn Tran: 80 (+8)

INSIDE THE SCORES
Gabel
  • Getting her start on 18, Gabel's history-made round consisted of one bogey, eight pars and a team-high of eight birdies – including a pair of strong back-to-back birdies to conclude the opening round.
Le
  • After rolling a bogey on her first hole (16), the sophomore settled in nicely to play the front nine – her back nine – in an impressive 4-under with six birdies coming on 2, 3, 5, 8, 10 and 15.
Manikandesh
  • Manikandesh put up a solid round in her first appearance as a Maverick with just two setbacks on 13 and 17. The newcomer turned in an even 72 which included 13 pars and three birdies.
Gulhane
  • Gulhane's 1st-round 75 was highlighted by her first collegiate eagle, coming on hole 10. Along with an eagle, the freshman's card featured one triple, four bogeys, nine pars and a pair of birdies which came on 9 and 16.
Tran
  • Tran's first hole (17) ultimately costed her momentum in Sunday's first round. However, the sophomore was able to card 10 pars and a trio of birdies which came on 15, 16 and 18.
NEXT UP
UTA will look to keep its momentum up heading into Monday's second round of the season-opening Timpanogos Collegiate Invitational as the squad will begin with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start.
