ARLINGTON– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (6-6) took down No. 57 ranked New Jersey Institute of Technology 4-3 after coming back from losing the doubles point in their Wednesday match at the UTA Tennis Center.
The early advantage came down to a deciding tiebreaker as the Mavericks fell short after splitting courts with the Highlanders.
Solano Caffarena and
Andres Medus earned their second win as a pair with a strong victory on Court 3. The Mavs went up a break early in the set over Oscar Callo von Platen and Pavel Petrov and kept the momentum rolling to take the first victory of the day 6-3.
The Highlanders retaliated with a win of their own as they evened the doubles score with a win over freshman pair
Yazid Lahjomri and
Meethre Barot on Court 2. The score stayed on-serve throughout the match, with neither team able to manage a break. Lahjomri and Barot could not even the score with German Lopez Andujar and Nejc Skorjanc in the end, as they fell 6-4.
All eyes were on Court 1 as
Dante Teramo and
Joan Torres Espinosa battled but fell short to Wil Jenkins and Pablo Perez Ramos. Teramo and Espinosa gained an early break as they carried a two game advantage throughout the set. The Highlanders managed to break Teramo's serve near the end of the set to force a tiebreaker. The Mavs fought hard after going down in the tiebreaker, but dropped the match by only two points 7-6 (5).
After the Mavs went down 1-0 before singles play, they got revenge in singles when they took four wins to clinch the ranked victory.
First off court was Medus as he dropped only one game against Petrov on Court 4. In the first set, Medus earned a dominant lead as he went up 4-1 at the second changeover. He closed out the set handily with the 6-1 win.
Medus left little doubt in the second set as he kept the momentum rolling. He did not drop a game in closing out the match, earning his sixth win of the spring with a 6-0 win.
Espinosa gave the Mavs the 2-1 lead as he extended his winning streak to seven matches straight on Court 1. Ramos started off hot as he gained an early break to go up 3-1. Espinosa fought hard to close the gap, bringing the score to 4-3 then breaking to even the score. With the momentum on Espinosa's side, he held serve then broke again to close out the set 6-4.
In the second set, Espinosa continued his success as he only dropped two games in pursuit of the win. Espinosa went into the changeover with a 4-1 lead before dropping only one more game in the 6-2 victory.
The Highlanders evened the match score with a victory on Court 5 over Sasso. The first set against Callo von Platen came within two games, as Sasso fell short 6-4.
In the second set, the score stayed on serve for the majority of the set, with Sasso having the one game lead throughout. As the end came near, Callo von Platen evened the score at 5-5 before taking the next two games for the 7-5 win.
In his sixth win of the season, Barot closed out a tight three-set match on Court 3 to give the Mavs the lead. Barot took the first set in a dominant fashion, defeating Skorjanc 6-2 for the lead. A 3-0 lead in the second set helped Skorjanc to come back, as he only allowed Barot three games before closing out the set 6-3.
In the final set, Barot was back on track as he earned an early break to go up 4-1. He continued to frustrate Skorjanc, allowing him one more game before closing out the match 6-2.
Court 2 clinched the match for the Mavericks as Teramo earned a decisive win over Jenkins. The first set came down to the wire, with the two players staying on-serve up until 5-5. Teramo served to go up 6-5, then took advantage of the opportunity to break Jenkins' serve as he closed out the set 7-5.
Teramo continued to impress in the second set as he earned two early breaks to go up 5-2. Jenkins earned one more game to bring the score within two, but Teramo took control in the final game as he served out the match for the 6-3 win.
Court 6's match concluded the day after the Mavs clinched, giving the Highlanders their final win. Lahjomri battled the heat in his match against Andujar but fell short in the final set. He earned a strong 6-3 win in the first set before Andujar evened the score with his own 6-3 win. The deciding set stayed close, but Lahjomri had to default when he was down 6-5.
The Mavericks will be back in action on Friday as they look to take on Drake at 11 a.m.
