Mavs Defeat Lamar 3-1 Behind Dygert’s Complete Game

BEAUMONT, TEXAS – The UT Arlington Maverick baseball team clawed it's way back to take the second game of the weekend series against Lamar University, 3-1.

THIS FRESHMAN CAN THROW
Caylon Dygert, a native of Magnolia, Texas, threw a complete game in the win against Lamar, making it just the 4th complete game thrown by a Maverick since 2017. The freshman tore up the mound with a 94-pitch game and struck out 4 batters. Allowing just 1 earned run throughout the game, Dygert has proven himself to be a force in the Mavs rotation as he has the lowest ERA on the team (1.54) and has thrown the most innings for the Mavericks with 23.1 innings pitched.

EARLY STRUGGLES
Throughout the beginning of the game, the Mavs once again struggled at the plate, only recording 2 hits throughout the first 7 innings. The first hit came from Jackson Hill in the very first at bat of the game, after that, the Mavs were unable to grab a hit until Ryan Black hit a single in the top of the 7th inning.

2-OUT MAGIC
Down 0-1 heading into the 8th inning, the Mavs offense flipped a switch in the top of the frame and were able to load the bases thanks to a single from Parker Airhart, and two walks from Jordan Medellin and Garrison Berkley. Jackson Hill, getting his first start of the year, played the hero for the Mavs as he drove in 2 runs with 2 outs on the board thanks to an RBI single up the middle to take the lead 2-1.

With the Mavs leading 2-1 heading into the top of the 9th, Tyson Pointer reached second base due to an error by the Lamar defense. After a strikeout and a groundout from Ryan Ellis that sent Pointer to 3rd base, Tate Bethel came up to bat with 2 outs on the board, which resulted in an RBI single that increased the Mavs lead, 3-1.

ON DECK
With the series tied at one a piece, the Mavs will play in the series finale tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont, Texas.
