Mavericks Take Down Wildcats In Second Conference Victory

ABILENE, Texas– The UT Arlington men's tennis team (8-7, 2-0 WAC) earned their second Western Athletic Conference (WAC) win in a dominant 6-1 victory over Abilene Christian at the Eager Tennis Pavilion on Friday.

The Mavs got the match rolling with strong doubles victories to clinch the 1-0 lead heading into singles play.

For the first time since the Mavs' opening match, Pedro Sasso and Solano Caffarena played together and took their first win as a duo on Court 1. The pair defeated Daniel Morozov and Cesar Barranquero 6-3 to move to 1-1 on the season and give the Mavs' their initial doubles win of the day.

Court 3 saw a new pairing as Andres Medus and Dante Teramo clinched the 1-0 advantage and earned their first victory as a duo. The Argentinian pair defeated Merse Deli and Jose Maria Rastrojo by two games, securing the 6-4 win to put the Mav's ahead going into singles play.

Singles went smoothly for the Mavericks as they continued to win all but one court to close out the victory.

First off was No. 105 Joan Torres Espinosa, securing his twelfth win in a row on Court 1. He earned a commanding victory over Morozov, playing a dominant first set to go up 6-2 in the match. In the second set, he followed up the first set in a similar manner as he closed out the match 6-3 to put the Mavs' up 1-0. Espinosa sits at 15-2 overall and undefeated in dual match play as he re-entered the Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings on Tuesday.

Freshman Meethre Barot put the Mavs one point away from clinching as he closed out his match on Court 4 over Dennis Dutine in straight sets. Dutine came within two games in the first set, but Barot fought to close out the final games for the 6-4 victory. Barot continued to improve in the second set as he dropped one less game to finish off the match 6-3. After the win, he sits at 2-0 in WAC play and 8-5 overall.

The Wildcats made a push on Court 6 as they earned their first point over Sasso in a three-set battle. Sasso came out strong in the first set as he dropped only two games to Martin Delnido for the 6-2 lead. Delnido fought back to even the score as he closed out a tight second set by two games 6-4. In the deciding set, Sasso could not overcome Delnido as he fell 6-2.

With the match score at 3-1, Medus secured the clinch after a strong three-set victory on Court 5 over Benjamin McDonald. McDonald took the initial lead as he played a strong first set, taking a 6-3 lead over Medus. In the second set, Medus retaliated as he dropped only two games to tie the score with a 6-2 win. In the deciding set, Medus took control as he allowed McDonald only one more game before earning the 6-1 win.

After the match had been decided, Courts 2 and 3 continued play and added two more victories for the Mavericks.

Teramo locked down the next win in a strong three-set effort on Court 2 as he took down Barranquero. The first set went in Teramo's favor as he dropped only one game, closing out 6-1. Barranquero responded in the second set, bringing the score within two games and eventually taking the lead as he evened the match with a 7-5 win. Teramo was not to be outdone in the deciding set as he triumphed in the final two games for the 6-4 victory.

The day ended with a win from Solano Caffarena on Court 3 as he cameback to take his match in three sets over Deli. The first set came within two games, but Caffarena fell short as Deli finished off 6-4. Caffarena answered in the second set with a win of his own as he evened the score with another 6-4 victory. In the deciding set, Caffarena left little doubt as he dropped only two games for the 6-2 triumph and his first WAC win of the season.

The Mavericks are set to face UT Rio Grande Valley in their next WAC matchup at 2 p.m. at the UTA Tennis Center.
