Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

MBB: Mavs Fall at New Mexico, 74-56

ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico – UT Arlington men's basketball (1-1) struggled offensively in its first road test of the season, falling 74-56 on the road at New Mexico (2-0) from The Pit in Albuquerque.

The first half was a defensive struggle, as the Mavs held the Lobos to eight points over the first nine-and-a-half minutes of play. But New Mexico's swarming defense caused the Mavs trouble throughout the opening stanza, forcing 14 turnovers and cashing that in for 13 first half points. Conversely, the Mavericks turned the Lobos over seven times, but only scored two points off those.

New Mexico took a 12-point lead into the break, 31-19, thanks in part to Deyton Albury's strong start, who finished with 10 points in the opening half. UTA was led by senior forward Raysean Seamster and freshman guard Jayden Smoot, who five points apiece in the first half. The Mavs were cold from the field early, shooting 22.2% on 6-of-27 from the field during the opening 20 minutes.

That improved in the second half, as the Mavs shot 50% (12-of-24), but it was not enough as the Mavs ultimately fell.

The Lobos stretched their lead in the second half to as many as 27, and despite another double figure scoring effort from senior forward Raysean Seamster, the Mavs were unable to cut into the lead. The preseason All-WAC selection finished with 17 points and nine boards and was one of two Mavericks to score in double figures.

Sophomore Bahsil Laster also chipped in with 10 off the bench. Freshman Jayden Smoot had eight off the bench, the first eight points of his collegiate career. In all, UTA turned the ball over 23 times and only assisted on seven of their 18 field goals in defeat.

UT Arlington has a quick turnaround, returning home on Monday, Nov. 10, to host Arlington Baptist at the College Park Center at 7 p.m. CT. The game will also be broadcast live on ESPN+ and on the radio on the Varsity Network App.
