STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The UT Arlington women's basketball team (6-7, 0-1 WAC) got an 18-point performance from the bench, but fell 66-57 to the Tarleton State Texans (7-5, 1-0 WAC) on the road Monday night inside the newly opened EECU Center.
Jadyn Atchison led the Lady Mavs with a career-high 15 points to go along with three steals. Kira Reynolds also tacked on eight points, nine rebounds and four blocks while Amiyah Reynolds helped out with five points and three steals.
Led by Laura Bello's five offensive rebounds, UTA did a great job crashing the offensive glass, pulling down 13 boards that resulted in 14 second chance points.
UTA forced 18 Tarleton State turnovers while committing 14 themselves in Monday's game. The Lady Mavs turned those takeaways into 12 points on the other end of the floor. Amiyah Reynolds and Atchison's three steals apiece led the way for UTA.
GAME FLOW
The Lady Mavs controlled most of the first half, leading for 17:06 of the game's first 20 minutes, managing to build a 10 point lead which was their largest of the half. With a 10-9 lead, the Lady Mavs would go on a 9-0 run to go up by 10 before the Texans would manage another basket before going into the second quarter, 19-11.
The Texans managed to hit four three-pointers in the second quarter, the most any opponent has hit on the Lady Mavs in a quarter this season, which helped Tarleton State claw back into the game and take a one point lead, 28-27 halftime lead. The timely shooting and staunch defense the Texans displayed in the second, holding the Lady Mavs to just eight points and without recording a bucket in the final five minutes of the half.
Tarleton State continued to increase its lead after halftime, building a 30-27 advantage before UTA went on a 6-0 run, punctuated by a basket from Atchison, to grab a 33-30 lead with 8:05 to go in the third. Tarleton State responded to seize a 47-46 lead entering the fourth quarter. UTA played well near the basket, scoring 10 of its 19 points in the paint.
UTA could not pull any closer in the fourth, losing by a final of 66-57. The Lady Mavs took advantage of their opportunities in the post, scoring six of their 11 points in the paint.
GAME NOTES
- The loss drops UTA to a 16-7 all-time record against Tarleton State while falling to 6-4 all-time in Stephenville.
- UTA falls to 25-19 all-time in conference openers and 2-3 all-time in the WAC.
- The Lady Mavs bench made an impact by scoring 18 points to its scoring output.
- UTA forced 18 turnovers while only committing 14, the third time this season the Lady Mavs forced opponents into more turnovers than committed. The Lady Mavs are 0-3 in those games.
- UTA cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 13 offensive boards in the game.
- Jadyn Atchison led the Lady Mavs with a game-high and career-high 15 points.
- UTA got a team-high 10 rebounds from Laura Bello, her most in a Lady Mavs uniform.
- The Lady Mavs hit three three-pointers in the first quarter, this is the sixth time this season the Lady Mavs have hit three or more triples in a quarter.
- UTA was outrebounded 44-37.
- This is just the third time in 13 games this season that opponents have shot over 30-percent from deep against the Lady Mavs, with the Texans shooting 33-percent from three-point range on Monday night.
