BATON ROUGE, La. - On the final day of LSU's Purple & Gold Challenge, the UT Arlington softball team fell to the No. 21 Northwestern Wildcats by final score of 11-3.
Senior Jessica Adams (1-2) got the ball to start for UT Arlington (4-7) and took the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks were trailing 1-0 in the first inning when they first put runs on the board. Junior Dee McClarity came across to score the lone run of the inning for UTA to get them on the board.
The Wildcats then scored three runs to retake their advantage heading into the fourth inning, when the Mavs responded by getting back on the scoreboard themselves. UTA pushed across a run on junior Marley Neises' two-out RBI double, which brought the score to 4-2 in favor of the Wildcats.
Northwestern expanded their lead to 11-2 before the Maverick offense got back in action, reducing that lead to 11-3 in the fifth. The Mavericks were unable to get any closer, leading to a loss in five innings.
GAME NOTES
» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the fifth, when it pushed one run across.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 31 Northwestern hitters in the game, allowing seven ground balls and six fly balls while striking out one.
» Neises led the Mavericks at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI.
» Northwestern was led offensively by junior Kansas Robinson, who went 4-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI.
» Sophomore Riley Grudzielanek led the Wildcats pitching staff, throwing five innings of three-run ball.
ON DECK
UTA's 6th Boerner Invitational will begin on Thursday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Feb. 23 from Allan Saxe Field.
The annual tournament will feature Northwestern State, Yale, North Texas, and Incarnate Word. The Boerner Invitational – named in honor of Melissa Boerner, a former UTA softball captain who was killed by a drunk driver the day before her senior year began in 1998 – is to help raise awareness to the importance of responsible drinking.
