ARLINGTON, Texas - The UT Arlington softball team improved its overall record to 7-8 following a doubleheader split against Northwestern State and North Texas on Sunday, Feb. 23 from Allan Saxe Field as part of the final day of the Boerner Invitational.
UTA vs. NORTHWESTERN STATE
UTA took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never surrendered the advantage on the way to a 2-1 win over the Northwestern State Demons.
Senior Emilie Hoelscher (2-2) picked up the victory out of the bullpen for UT Arlington (7-7). The left-hander went two shutout innings while giving up one hit. Sophomore Abi Gutierrez also made an impact in the circle for the Mavericks, throwing two shutout innings while allowing no hits.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks got on the board immediately, starting their scoring with one run in the bottom of the first inning. UT Arlington scored twice, with one run coming across on junior Mallory Stone's single. Northwestern State put one run on the scoreboard before the game was over, but the Mavericks still held on for the 2-1 win.
GAME NOTES
» UT Arlington's highest scoring inning was the first, when it pushed two runs across.
» UT Arlington took a 2-0 lead in the bottom half of the first and didn't surrender that lead for the remainder of the game.
» UT Arlington pitchers faced 27 Northwestern State hitters in the game, allowing 11 ground balls and eight fly balls while striking out one.

UTA vs. NORTH TEXAS
The UT Arlington Mavericks put together an admirable effort on Sunday, but ultimately came up short, falling to the North Texas Eagles by the score of 6-4.
Sophomore Jade Moreno (0-2) started and took the loss in the circle for UT Arlington (7-8).
In the batter's box, the Mavericks were paced by sophomore Mia McNulty, who went 1-for-4 on the day with a home run and two RBI. Junior Kailee Bautista put together a noteworthy day at the plate as well, going 2-2 with two walks. Freshman Talia Maldonado also helped out for UT Arlington, putting together one hit in three trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Trailing 2-0, the Mavericks first put runs on the board in the first inning. UT Arlington plated two runs when McNulty left the yard with Bautista aboard.
The Eagles broke the tie and re-took the lead heading into the seventh inning, when the Mavericks got back on the scoreboard. Maldonado's run-scoring single highlighted an inning where UT Arlington scored twice, which brought the score to 6-4 in favor of the Eagles. The Mavericks were unable to get any closer, as neither team scored again in the ballgame.
