ARLINGTON, Texas – UT Arlington forward Kira Reynolds has been named the Western Athletic Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league office announced Monday, following her standout performance against Abilene Christian.
Reynolds led all scorers with 21 points on an efficient 9-of-12 shooting while adding seven rebounds, four assists, and four blocks in 36 minutes of action.
"Her ability to be able to impact the game on both ends was tremendous for a freshman. Her ability to defend the rim; she did that. Her ability to be able to get second-chance opportunities offensively, she did that. Her ability to handle the ball and be a playmaker, she did that, and then to have 21 points and play her highest minutes that she's done, exceptional," head coach Shereka Wright said. "She's still continued to find a way."
On the season, Reynolds is averaging 12.4 points and 8.2 rebounds per game while shooting 48.3 percent from the field. She has started 13 of 16 games for the Lady Mavs and currently leads the WAC in blocks, ranks fourth in the conference in rebounding, and is tied for fifth nationally with 48 blocks on the season.
The Lady Mavs return home for their next two WAC matchups, beginning with Utah Tech on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., before taking on Utah Valley on Saturday, Jan. 17, at 1:00 p.m.
