LAS VEGAS, NV. – No. 6 seed UT Arlington's season came to an end Friday afternoon as the Lady Mavs fell to No. 2 seed Abilene Christian, 70-50, in WAC Tournament action at Orleans Arena.
"This program has had a lot of success, and sometimes that gets overshadowed by records," head coach Shereka Wright said. "I'm extremely proud of my team for their resilience. After taking this program over, we've done some great things, but this time we just fell short."
Kali Haizlip and Kira Reynolds paced the Lady Mavs with eight points each, while Alexsyah Goudeau and Kendal Robinson added seven points apiece. Robinson also dished out a team-high three assists, and Erin Sellers chipped in six points off the bench.
"My time at UTA has been resilience and loyalty. I put my head down and got things done," Haizlip said. "So, taking the time to reflect, I'm proud of myself and what I've been able to accomplish."
Abilene Christian set the tone early, outscoring UT Arlington 23-12 in the opening quarter and building a 41-26 advantage by halftime. The Wildcats maintained control in the second half and stretched their lead to as many as 26 in the fourth quarter.
UTA finished strong, outscoring ACU 17-14 in the final period. The Lady Mavs shot 38 percent from the floor and 30 percent from 3-point range while pulling down 27 rebounds.
The Wildcats were led by Payton Hull, who recorded a game-high 21 points to go along with eight rebounds. ACU shot 47.9 percent from the field in the win.
UT Arlington also got five points and two rebounds from Amiyah Reynolds off the bench, while Nya Threatt added one point and two rebounds in 26 minutes of action.
Veteran Nya Threatt, one of two players on the roster with over 100 games in a Lady Mav uniform, on why she never left Arlington.
"Probably the biggest thing is Coach Reke," Threatt said. "She really took me under her wing, and that kind of loyalty sticks with you. So I felt like I didn't want to go anywhere else, because you're not going to get that everywhere else."
Reflecting on her favorite memories with her seniors, Wright said, "It's all of it. It's about how I help these young people be the best version of themselves when they leave here."
