ARLINGTON, TX -- The UT Arlington softball team capped off the Maverick Invitational weekend with a win over Columbia, 9-2, on Saturday evening at Allan Saxe Field. The victory was highlighted by a huge third inning with seven runs for the Mavericks. After this weekend's tournament, the Mavericks move to an 11-14 overall record.
Sophomore Madi McDonnell (6-7) got the win for UT Arlington (11-14). The right-hander went seven innings, giving up two runs, both of them earned, on six hits, allowing two walks and striking out two.
At the plate, the Mavericks were led by Kelsey Creech, who went 1-for-3 on the day with a home run and two RBIs. Freshman Valeria Feeney furnished a noteworthy performance as well, going 2-for-2 with a double and a walk. Freshman Kaylee Schweitzer also contributed for UTA putting together two hits in four trips to the plate while adding an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard first, starting in the third inning. UT Arlington's offense started clicking and put up seven runs, including a two-run error off the bat of junior Kaitlyn Sailor.
The Lions then gained ground, narrowing the lead to 7-2 until the Mavericks expanded their advantage in the fourth. UTA picked up a pair of runs in the frame. which brought the Mavericks lead to 9-2. The score remained 9-2 for the rest of the game, as UTA coasted to the win.
