ARLINGTON, Texas – The UT Arlington softball team took game one over Southern Utah in the weekend conference series at 6-4 on Friday afternoon at Allan Saxe Field.
The Mavericks now move to a 22-21 overall record and a 10-6 record in WAC play.
UTA was led at the plate by
Marley Neises, who went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Kaylee Schweitzer went 2-for-3 as well with one run scored.
Mia McNulty went 1-for-3 with two RBI and
Peyton Holland went 1-for-1 with a homer and 2 RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SUU struck first in the top of second inning, as Savannah Lira delivered an RBI single to make it 1-0.
UTA responded in the bottom half of the inning when
Valeria Feeney singled to left field, driving in
Marley Neises from second to tie the game at 1-1. Later in the inning,
Kaylee Schweitzer scored on a groundout by
Mia McNulty, giving the Mavericks a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the third, SUU's Isabella Knight evened things up with her second home run of the season, sending one to center field to make it 2-2.
UTA regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning as
Marley Neises stole home, putting the Mavericks back in front, 3-2.
SUU answered in the top of the sixth when Lira struck again with a two-run home run to left center, giving the Thunderbirds a 4-3 advantage.
The Mavericks responded in the bottom of the sixth, highlighted by a two-run home run from
Peyton Holland to reclaim the lead at 6-4 and take the game. The homer marked Holland's 13
th of the season, extending her lead atop the WAC, making her one homer away from tying the UTA single-season home run record.
