Casey Devoll completed his fourth season as head coach of the UT Arlington men’s golf team in 2022-23 after being promoted in May of 2019. He had previously served as the associate head coach of the men’s program since the 2016-17 season, and prior to that was an assistant coach for both the Maverick men and women for the 2015-16 campaign.
In his fourth season leading the Mavs in 2022-23, Devoll helped spearhead the following highlights:
- A co-championship at the Tunica National Intercollegiate with a 1-under 863 total. UTA tied Arkansas State, but a playoff was not contested.
- The most eagles (17) in single-season program history, the 4th-lowest scoring average (292.09), the 6th-highest birdie total (464) and the 6th-most (tied) par-or-better rounds (nine).
- In the final round of the WAC Championship, UTA posted a 12-under 276 total. The -12 was the best in a conference championship in program lore, and represented the 6th-best score to par in any tournament. All told, the Mavs tied for the 6th-best 54-hole score to par in program annals at -15.
- UTA’s 4.78 par-5 scoring average for the year was 2nd all-time to only the 4.73 average by Devoll’s 2019-20 squad. Additionally, the Mavs averaged 3.19 on the par-3 holes for the season to represent the 5th-best in program history.
In his third season in charge of the program in 2021-22, Devoll oversaw the following highlights:
- The Mavs posted an even 293.00 scoring average over 31 rounds, representing the 6th-best single-season mark in program history. UTA’s +5.90 score to par was the 4th-best in single-season program lore.
- UTA tied for the 2nd-most par-or-better rounds in single-season program history with 11, just one shy of matching the record of 12 set by the 2008-09 team in 33 rounds. Helping fuel those performances was a record 16 eagles – the most by a UTA team in a single year in program history.
- The 2021-22 team accounted for three of the top-8 54-hole totals in program history: 839 at the Grand Canyon Invitational (4th-lowest), 844 at the Trinity Forest Invitational (6th-lowest) and 845 at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational (8th-lowest). The 845 was 19-under par, representing the 2nd-best score to par in program history (record: -41 at the 2007 Turtle Bay Resort Collegiate Invitational).
- UTA’s 4.83 par-5 scoring average was the 2nd-best in program history behind only Devoll’s 2019-20 squad which averaged 4.73. The Mavs reached that mark thanks in part to 451 birdies – the most in a year since 2010-11, and also the 7th-most in program history. Additionally, the Mavs posted a 4.21 par-4 scoring average to check in as the 5th-best in single-season program history.
In his second complete season leading the Mavs in the still-impacted COVID 2020-21 season, Devoll helped the Mavs accomplish the following:
- Devoll picked up his first outright victory as UTA head coach by winning Sam Houston’s Bearkat Invitational by seven shots with a 54-hole 13-under 851 total following a final-round 10-under 278. That 278 total was tied for the 11th-best round in program history. In comparison to par, the -10 round was tied for the 8th-best in program history.
- The team crown for the Mavs was their first since September of 2019 when they were co-champs of UTSA’s Lone Star Invitational. UTA’s last outright tournament triumph came in March of 2018 at Appalachian State’s Cape Fear National Intercollegiate.
- In addition to the team title, Kyle Cox claimed medalist honors by two shots at the Bearkat Invitational thanks to a final-round 69 as part of a 6-under 210 total. Cox became the first Maverick to win a tournament since Paul McConnell claimed the Western Athletic Conference Championship in 2013 during UTA’s lone year as a league member.
- UTA’s six par-or-better rounds in only 21 opportunities were the 10th-most in program history and the 2nd-most in 21 or fewer rounds (nine in 2019-20).
- The Mavs posted an 848 (-16) 54-hole score at the Little Rock Invitational – the 7th-best total in program history; the 16-under score to par was the 4th-lowest in program lore.
In his first full season at the helm of the Mavs in 2019-20, Devoll helped lead the Mavs to the following accomplishments:
- UTA finished as co-champions of the Lone Star Invitational to begin the season. It was the Mavericks first team championship since March of 2018 when it claimed Appalachian State’s Cape Fear National Intercollegiate. However, that field featured several non-Division-I teams and many low-ranked D-I teams. The Lone Star Invitational featured four other Sun Belt Conference members and five of the 11 teams entered the year ranked in the Golfstat Top 100.
- The Mavs climbed as high as #45 in the official Golfstat Rankings in the fall.
- UTA posted an 846 total (-18) at the Mark Simpson Colorado Invitational in October – the 6th-lowest 54-hole score in program history. The 18-under score relative to par was the 2nd-best in program history, bested by only a -41 mark at the 2007 Turtle Bay Resort Intercollegiate.
- As a team, UTA established the program single-season record for par-3 scoring at 3.11, besting the previous mark of 3.14 in 2017-18 and also finishing with the 19th-best average in the nation. The Mavs also set the par-5 scoring record at 4.78, shattering the score of 4.84 in 2004-05.
- The 2019-20 team secured the lowest scoring average relative to par in program history at +3.43, besting the previous number of +4.18 in 2008-09. The Mavs’ 291.43 scoring average in 21 rounds is the 2nd-best in single-season program history, finishing just behind the 2008-09 squad’s record of 291.09.
- Despite playing just 21 rounds, UTA had nine par-or-less rounds – tied for the 5th-most in single-season history (record: 12 in 33 rounds in 2008-09).
In his first year overseeing most of the day-to-day operations of the men’s program in 2018-19 – including exclusively for the spring season – UTA drastically turned things around in its spring slate, highlighted by the following accolades:
- Through the first 18 rounds of the year, UTA was a combined 254-over par with no rounds under par. Over its final 13 rounds, UTA went a combined 29-under par with nine under-par rounds. Those nine rounds represent the 5th-most par-or-better rounds in single-season program history (record: 12).
- The Mavs had an average team score of 301.3 over their 14 rounds in the fall. In the spring that average dropped to 287.4 over 17 rounds, and over its final 14 rounds of the season, UTA’s scoring average was an impressive 284.3. For the year, UTA finished with a 293.71 average score – the 7th-best in single-season program history.
- Included in the low scoring were some of the best rounds ever recorded in the nearly 60-year history of the program. A pair of 274s (both 10-under performances) in the spring tied for the 4th-best rounds in program history, bested only by a 272, 271 and 270 – all three of which came in either 2007-08 or 2008-09.
- The first 274 came in the 2nd round of Seattle University’s Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay on Apr. 1, while the second occurred a few weeks later in the final round of the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Apr. 23 – nine shots better than the Mavs’ previous tournament low.
- UTA also produced a 277 in the 2nd round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on Apr. 8 – tied for the 9th-best round in program history. That 11-under showing on the par-72 layout was tied for the 6th-lowest round relative to par in program history (record: -18); the 10-under rounds of 274 were tied for the 8th-lowest in program history relative to par.
- All three of those rounds also aided in some of the best 54-hole totals in program history as UTA posted an 837 (-15) three-round performance at the Sun Belt Championship – the 3rd-lowest total in program history (record: 823, -41) and a total which in any of the previous 42 Sun Belt Championships would have won the tournament going away.
- The Mavs also secured an 841 (-11) total at the Redhawk Invitational, which stands alone as the 4th-lowest total in program history, while the 857 (-7) at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic tied for the 14th-best.
- Additionally, UTA had a team par-3 scoring average of 3.19 for the year – the 3rd-lowest in single-season program history – and finished the campaign with its highest Golfstat Ranking (#115) since a 2014-15 (#103).
