Tyrone Edgar is entering his eighth season as an assistant coach for the UT Arlington men's and women's track and field teams. He also serves as recruiting coordinator for the programs. A former world-class sprinter with Team NIKE, he has helped the Mavericks pick up men's indoor track Sun Belt Conference titles in 2014, 2017 and 2019 and outdoor crowns in 2014, 2015 and 2017.
While the NCAA’s 2020 outdoor track and field season may have been canceled due to the worldwide Coronavirus (COVID-19) Pandemic, the UT Arlington men’s and women’s track and field program still found plenty of time to achieve greatness during the 2020 indoor track season.
Edgar helped the UTA men finish as the Sun Belt Conference runner up. The Mavericks have placed either first or second at every indoor meet since joining the league in 2014.
Ismael Kone, the 2020 Men’s SBC Outstanding Freshman, was the only male to win multiple individual events at the SBC Indoor Championships, as he swept the 60-meter and 200-meter dashes. He ran a personal-best 6.74 to win the 60m and followed it up with a 21.03 in the 200m, the No. 3 time in school history.
The women recorded a signature victory in the 4x400m relay at the SBC meet as the Mavericks' squad of Jordyn McCarden, Mikayla Koester, Vanessa Ugorji and Tatyana Terrell posted a time of 3:44.51, which was seven seconds faster than the team's previous best time in 2020. In addition, it was the No. 2 clocking in school history, just .21 off the UTA mark.
Edgar's sprinting experience has helped make an immediate impact. Since 2014, three individual school sprint records and one relay record have been broken. Included in that are Clayton Vaughn (men's indoor 60m), Vaughn (men's outdoor 100m) and Vanessa Ugorji (women's outdoor 400m), as well as the men's 4x100m relay team in 2019. In the 2020 indoor season, freshman Ismael Kone won the league's 60 meters and the 200 meters en route to Sun Belt Conference Most Outstanding Freshman honors.
Many of UTA's greatest sprint seasons have occurred over the past seven years. In 2015, Vaughn smashed the school's 100m record with a 9.93 to win the Sun Belt Conference title with the No. 1 clocking in league history. It ranked among the 10 fastest times in NCAA history and ranked 13th in the world in 2015.
In addition, Quentin Butler cracked the 10-second barrier with a 9.99 at the NCAA West Preliminary Round, the second-fastest clocking in school history. Both Vaughn, who was an All-American after placing eighth, and Butler, who was ninth, reached the NCAA Championships in the 100 meters.
In 2014, Vaughn became the first Maverick ever to earn NCAA Outdoor All-America honors in three events, the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay, in the same meet. Vaughn also had the nation's fastest regular-season time in the indoor 60 meters (6.55), obliterating his own school record by .06. He was unable to compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships due to injury.
A native of Great Britain, Edgar was a member of his country's 4x100m relay team that reached the semifinals at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In 2009, he was a 100m semifinalist at the World Championships and was on Great Britain's bronze medal 4x100m squad.
In 2008, he set a lifetime best with a time of 10.06 in the 100 meters and was the 100m champion at the European Cup.
As a collegian, Edgar was a two-time All-American for Texas A&M and was a three-time All-Big 12 Conference selection. He was the runner up in the 100 meters at the 2006 Big 12 Championships and placed seventh at the NCAA Championships.
Prior to his two years at Texas A&M, Edgar was an eight-time NJCAA All-American at Kansas City Community College. He graduated from Texas A&M with a degree in agricultural leadership and development. At the high school level, he helped mentor the Lancaster High School team that won the 2012 Texas 4A State Championship. Edgar is a Certified USATF Level 1 Coach.
He and his wife, Jade, have one son, Kingston.
