Ethan McIlhargey joined the UT Arlington Lady Mavs staff after spending the 2024-25 season at Dodge City Community College, where he helped guide the Conquistadors to a historic season in which they finished with a 31-5 record which marked the most wins in a single season in program history to go along with KJCCC and Region 6 championships, while making the program’s first ever Final Four. As the defensive coordinator for the Conquistadors, McIlhargey’s defense held teams to 53 points per game, an 11 point improvement from 63 points per game a season ago which made them one of the best defensive teams in the NJCAA.
Â
Prior to his time at Dodge City, McIlhargey spent two seasons at Abilene Christian where he was involved in several aspects of the team including recruiting, post-player development, scouting opponents, and more. He was instrumental in bringing in the highest ranked recruiting class in program history in back-to-back seasons for the Wildcats. While helping the team compete on the court the program boosted the 11th-best team GPA in all of NCAA DI programs.Â

At the time, the Pac-12 was the number one conference in the country, just above the SEC.
Â
He spent a season at Tennessee Tech as the Director of Basketball Operations with their women's basketball program. The Golden Eagles finished 22-11 during the 2018-19 season, going from seven wins the previous year to 22 and the team made the postseason. He coordinated all aspects of practice, game scheduling, and travel for the program as well as other duties as assigned. During the 2017-18 season, he was the video coordinator at Stephen F. Austin, a season which saw the Ladyjacks post a 25-7 record as the team earned a bid into the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
Â
His coaching career started as a student assistant at his alma mater the University of Idaho where he aided the Vandals in making three NCAA Tournament appearances. The Kuna, Idaho, native earned his bachelor's degree in interdisciplinary studies from the University of Idaho.
