Shannon Brown enters her fifth season as assistant basketball coach at the University of Texas at Arlington, after joining Coach Capps[apos] staff in January of 2001.

Brown serves as the primary recruiting coordinator for the Lady Mavs, along with organizing team travel and scouting.

Brown played a key role in the revitalization of the Lady Mavs program by bringing some of the area[apos]s top players who comprised one of the youngest starting fives in all of Division I women[apos]s college basketball in 2001-02.

Brown[apos]s on the court responsibilities include working with the team[apos]s guards. One of the players she worked with, Krystal Buchanan, became the school[apos]s all-time leader in career assists and broke her own single-season assist record that she set during her freshman season.

Brown came to UTA from the University of New Mexico, where she served as an assistant coach from 1996-1999 on Don Flanagan[apos]s staff. While at UNM, she was in charge of coordinating the team[apos]s junior college recruiting and scouting. Brown also served as the staff liaison with the marketing and promotions departments, helping the Lobos rank in the top 10 nationally in attendance, along with being the staff liaison with the [quote]3-Point Club[quote] season ticket sales team which set season ticket sales records each year.

During her tenure at UNM, the Lobos amassed a 68-24 overall record, winning both a Western Athletic Conference Pacific Division title and the school[apos]s first WAC Tournament championship. The team also made one appearance in the NCAA Tournament and reached the Elite Eight of the 1998-1999 Women[apos]s National Invitation Tournament.

Prior to her tenure at UNM, Brown spent two years as an assistant at New Mexico Junior College. Brown was responsible for handling recruiting, overseeing the academic affairs of players and scouting. In her second season at NMJC, the team qualified for the 1995-96 National Junior College Athletic Association Region V Tournament.

From August 1999, until she joined the UTA coaching staff, Brown worked in sales and product development at Webb Electronics in Carrollton.

Brown earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology from New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M. in 1994. In her only year at NMHU, Brown captained the Cowgirls basketball team to a 17-9 record, and a runner-up finish in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Tournament.

She transferred to NMHU after her junior year from Adams State (Colo.) College, where she earned All-RMAC honors in 1992-93, when she led the team in scoring at 15.0 points per game and was second in rebounding at 8.0 boards per contest. Brown earned accolades in the classroom as well as she earned Academic All-Conference laurels in 1991-92.

A top-notch high school athlete, Brown earned all-state honors and appeared in the North-South All-Star Game on the basketball floor at Hobbs (N.M.) High School. Brown[apos]s skills were not limited to the hardwood as she was also an all-district soccer player as a goalie and a state qualifier in the 4x100 meter and 4x200 meter relay teams on the track.

Brown is a member of the Women[apos]s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).
