Gonzalo Morell was named an assistant coach for the UT Arlington tennis program in August 2022. His duties include travel planning, recruiting, budgeting, fundraising and marketing.
Morell comes to Arlington following two years at LSU, where he served as a graduate assistant coach with the men’s tennis program and helped the Tigers reach as high as No. 33 in the country while Ronald Hohmann was named an ITA All-American under this tutelage.
As a student-athlete, Morell starred at Middle Tennessee, where he ascended as high as No. 85 in ITA national singles and No. 50 in ITA doubles. He was a four-time All-Conference USA selection in both singles and doubles. In 2018, he was the ITA finalist of the Ohio Valley Region, defeating the No. 7 ranked player in the nation in the round of 16. He was the first Blue Raider singles player since Daniel Klemetz in 2002 to advance to the ITA Fall Nationals.
In 2019, he helped lead Middle Tennessee to a Conference USA championship for the first time while being awarded the MTSU True Blue Award, given by the president of the university and symbolic of the highest honor for a current student-athlete recognizing outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments, university/community service, and leadership.
Morell was named one of the Directors of the Ferrer Tennis Academy in 2019, serving as a hitting partner of David Ferrer and his team.
A native of Perth, Australia, Morell earned a bachelor’s degree in business management in 2019 from Middle Tennessee with magna cum laude honors. He followed that up with an MBA in consulting following his time at LSU.
